What is the myth of meritocracy? What evidence do we have for calling it a ‘myth’?
A key criticism of functionalism is that it ignores the unjust and discriminatory social structures, and as a result, they are reproduced. Explain this claim, and using the readings, give an example of how that happens!
Functionalists suggest that education is a source of social mobility because it is based on the principle of meritocracy. The education system rewards individual abilities and efforts, and competition at schools is based on the principles of equal opportunity. Basing your answer from the readings and the video, do you agree that educational systems provide equal opportunity to everyone?

1. Myth of meritocracy
They argue that the proletariat are persuaded to believe that the rich and powerful reached their positions through their hard work and natural ability rather than because of their privileged birth because this led them to accept inequality as fair.
3. Functionalists suggest that education is a source of social mobility because it is based on the principle of meritocracy. The education system rewards individual abilities and efforts, and competition at schools is based on the principles of equal opportunity. However, educational systems can not provide equal opportunity to everyone and education is not a source of social mobility in modern industrial societies but a mean for ruling or wealthy classes to cement and prepetuate their privileged social position across generations.
Different schools have different education systems, so there are some schools with good teachers, students can get better education. But some schools don't have good teachers. Children can't get an equal education.Another reason is that there are some poor people and some rich people will get different education, rich people's children can get elite education.

2.For example, the speaker of the Ted talk mentions that the private school she goes to is well-equipped, and kids go to extra-curricular activities that most black kids like her can't afford to attend, hence the racial inequality in education systems are reproduced.

1) Myth of meritocracy is achieve upward social mobility through one's own merits regardless of one's social position at first, but is not widely attainable in capitalist societies because meritocracy has evolved to stand for somehow ineffable combination of cognitive ability, extracurriclar talents which is upper class child have.

2) It happens because upper class children have assess to more resources, resulting in more opportunity and higher education than the poor. Therefore the society is leaded by the rich.

3) educational system do not provide equal opportunity to everyone. There are discrimination by gender, skin color, race and wealth in educational system. Base on the video the black children does not have enough school stuffs like book, they need to rely on other's donation. In the opposite side, the rich children can be educated with enough resources like a big library so that they can gain more knowledge from it than poor children. Therefore rich kids will be on the higher position in society than poor kids as they reward individual ability and efforts by school. So we thought education is not a source of social mobility

1. Myth of meritocracy is that sociology argues that meritocracy only applies to certain people as it ignores classes and social economic status in society.
Private schools in America have more advanced resources and teach much more knowledge than public schools. However, only people with higher social economical backgrounds can enter private schools due to its fee as an entry barrier, which makes meritocracy unable to be applied due to education inequality.

2. Every society must be formed by different components and people from all backgrounds inorder for it to run smoothly. People who are born in a better social background will easier approach higher education. On the other hand, for people who are born from a worse social background, their route to higher education is much more difficult

3. Based on the example mentioned in (1), we can see that though you can work very hard and be very talented, with a lack of resources in a certain educational institution, you cannot reach your full potential or reach the top of society due to differences in the level of education. Therefore, the education system does not provide equal opportunity to everyone.

1. Myth of meritocracy is a phrase arguing that meritocracy, or achieving upward social mobility through one's own merits regardless of one's social position, is not widely attainable in capitalist societies because of inherent contradictions.

2. Functionalism is that it ignores the unjust and discriminatory social structures, for example, according to the text it mentioned that when someone is hired because his or her mom or dad made a phone call, where this example reflects that someone earn their privilege without paying effort, brain power or hardwork rather than inheritance.

3. No, from the ted talk show, it mentioned that some elite schools have better resources than others, thus those kids have more opportunities in the society, it shows that the educational system is not equitable for every individual.
