Jonas was washing an elder, and they were talking about Edna. She just was released. She was a birth mother, and has no family. They didn't think her life was meaningful. 

The committee is they only people who knows where people go after they get released. The rest of the community doesn't have any clue where they go after they walk through those doors at the ceremony of goodbye's.

It's a 2 day activity. Lily's ceremony was today and Jonas ceremony was the last ceremony on the second day. Lily went up for her ceremony and couldn't wait for the day she received her bike. 

Gabe wasn't at his ceremony. He has to wait till he's the right weight. They will keep him fr a year to see if he will improve or else he will get released. Everyone in Jonas household had to sign a paper saying that they wouldn't get attached to Gabe.

When newborn kids get released they are sent elsewhere and would never return to the community.

Asher get's called up at the ceremony to receive his assignment. He gets given the assistant director of recreation. Fiona (number 18) is right before Jonas and she get's assigned as the caretaker of the old. It's finally Jonas turn but instead they skip him. They went direcrectly from 18-20. Jonas sat in his seat terrified wondering what would happen next.

Jonas received a folder when he got selected as the receiver of memory. It was a one page document filled with the rules. The rules were all going against the governing rules. The rules were the following...
1. Go immediately at the end of school hours each day to the Annex entrance behind the House of the Old and present yourself to the attendant.
2 .Go immediately to your dwelling at the conclusion of Training Hours each day.
3. From this moment you are exempted from the rules governing rudeness. You may ask any questions of any citizen and you will receive answers.
4. Do not discuss your training with any other member of the community, including parents, and Elders.
5. From this moment you are prohibited from dream-telling.
6. Except for illness or injury unrelated to your training, do not apply for any medication.
7. You are not permitted to apply for release.
8. You may lie.

Why do people not speak of the women name who was selected to be the receiver a long time ago?

He notices that the Annex is quite different than any other place. There is locks on the office doors. No other resident in the community has locks on their doors.

It's been 10 years since the last selection.

The Giver eye's are pale as well.

The older man's job (the old receiver) is to tell Jonas all his memory's. It's not only his memory's but its the memory's from the whole world. The first memory Jonas receives is the memory about snow. Jonas doesn't know what snow is or sledding. The old man transmits his memory of snow to Jonas by placing his hands on his back.

Why is the Annex so much different than the rest of the community?

When the old successor got released all the memories were lost . The Giver will never get them back. They're somewhere out in the world. The community use to have access to all the memories but it was ciaos.

Jonas no longer had this memory and he wanted to ask the Giver for another, but then decide it would be best not to tell him. He was afraid of getting introuble.

If Jonas never questioned what being released meant he would never know that to save Gabriel he had to run away. 

Jonas lived a life without knowing much about the society. Their society had very strict rules, and the community really didn't know much about what happens when you for example get released.  When Jonas became the receiver he then got the privilege to ask whatever he wanted and he had to get an honest answer. Jonas questioned the Giver about what happens when you get released and he found out that it was death. His father killed whoever was getting released by injecting them. When Jonas found this out, and he heard that Gabriel was going to get released Jonas planned his exit to elsewhere sooner than expected, and took Gabriel with him, and saved his life.
