- "Using classroom response systems for interactive assessment"
I have just recently tried this in class and I've been amazed at the results. I feel that it's sparked great conversations in our class and helped me catch errors before they become too engrained.

I also love the idea of using coding in the classroom. I interned for a software engineering company and was amazed that there were almost no women. I'd love to get girls into computer science and engineering from an early age so that they see it as an option. I'm just not sure how to integrate it into our curriculum

"without that A in STEAM, you're not going to get innovation." In a master's level course on research methods that he teaches, he gets a lot of students who are arts or music teachers beginning work on their theses in his class. He often hears them comment on how disconnected they feel from the rest of the STEM activities in their schools. So the key to STEAM succeeding is "getting the 'A' to really be a part of it, as opposed to the STEM [teachers] basically having their own part and then the A being kind of off to the side, not truly integrated." Once that integration happens, Nank said, "then I think it will be really hot."

Even teaching kids at the lower school, I feel that I have to spend a lot of time in the classroom teaching not only how to use the tools appropriately, but also the safety, privacy, and kindness required to access the tools we'd like to use.

The three topics that sparked my interest (and with which I would like to experiment in my classroom) are:
1) STEAM
- Interdisciplinary content and practice makes English more interesting and accessible to students with diverse interests and who, tbh, might not like or see the arts as necessary/valuable. Showing the inextricable and long-standing relationships between the arts and STEM not only helps students appreciate arts more, but also broadens and deepens their understanding and practice of STEM, too.
2) Open Educational Resources
3) Web-based projects and research
- I see 2 and 3 working closely together in my classroom as I work to design a unit around research and the responsible use of tech for the purpose in an English classroom. At Parker, research writing is mostly only taught in history classes (in the humanities), and I'd like to diversify that offering by teaching students about research in English. That said, it would require a lesson and practice with identifying content that is both accessible and reliable. I would definitely work with our librarian to craft this unit and make it as meaningful and current as possible!
