Estuvimos varias horas por la mañana y durante este tiempo pasaron por este punto alrededor de 60 peregrinos. La mayoría de ellos eran españoles, pero también conocimos a un peregrino inglés, una alemana, dos holandeses y dos italianas. Casi todos nos contaron un poco de su historia, pero la que más me llamó la atención fue la de la peregrina alemana. Había realizado el Camino de Santiago varias veces por rutas diferentes, pero esta vez había llegado hasta Ferrol a pie desde su casa en Alemania. También nos contó que previamente había estado ayudando en unas inundaciones que se habían producido en su país donde se lesionó las espalda, por ello esta ocasión era una prueba personal para ella misma.

En general, fue una mañana muy agradable porque pudimos conocer las experiencias de diferentes personas y también presentarles nuestro proyecto y nuestra organización para darnos a conocer entre los más jóvenes.

Last Tuesday we did a new activity for some of the participants of the Ferrol group. This consisted of preparing a stand in the Monasterio del Couto, a strategic point of the route of the English Way between Ferrol and Neda, where we placed some free snacks for the pilgrims, as well as shells collected by us or motivational phrases written on small papers. We also carried the stamp of the office in case any of them wanted to have their credentials stamped.

We stayed for several hours in the morning and during this time about 60 pilgrims passed through this point. Most of them were Spanish, but we also met an English pilgrim, a German, two Dutch and two Italians. Almost all of them told us a bit of their story, but the one that caught my attention the most was the German pilgrim. She had walked the Camino de Santiago several times by different routes, but this time she had come to Ferrol on foot from her home in Germany. She also told us that she had previously been helping in some floods that had occurred in her country where she injured her back, so this occasion was a personal test for herself.

All in all, it was a very pleasant morning because we were able to get to know the experiences of different people and also to present our project and our organisation in order to make ourselves known to young people.

Esta semana ha sido un poco especial ya que hemos acompañado a los peregrinos del grupo ASCM, una asociación sociocultural que tiene como objetivo la plena integración de las personas con discapacidad. El grupo estaba compuesto por 5 peregrinos de movilidad reducida que iban en silla de ruedas, sus acompañantes y otros voluntarios. Venían de diferentes partes de España, como Jerez de la Frontera y Barcelona, así como de Ferrol.

Los voluntarios de Xacobeando estuvimos con ellos durante dos etapas, desde el inicio del Camino en Ferrol hasta Neda y el segundo día desde Fene a Pontedeume. Nuestra función fue ayudarles a pasar por los tramos en los que la accesibilidad no era la más adecuada para ellos, tomar nota de esos puntos para poder localizarlos en el mapa y comunicarlos a los supervisores y dar compañía y charla durante el recorrido.

Aunque el Camino Inglés es uno de los más accesibles para realizar en estas condiciones, hubo varios momentos en los que había que empujar a los peregrinos hacia arriba en las cuestas o para pasar por las hendiduras que había en el terreno. La tierra suelta y las rocas también supusieron un problema porque hacían resbalar a las ruedas o provocaban que las sillas se quedaran atascadas. Varios de ellos tuvieron problemas con la batería de sus sillas, ya que se gastaron antes de finalizar la etapa y tuvieron que terminarla en furgoneta.

A pesar de todas estas dificultades, la actitud de los peregrinos era admirable porque se les notaba las ganas y la ilusión de hacer el Camino y siempre estaban haciendo bromas y dispuestos a afrontar cualquier obstáculo que nos encontráramos. Esa energía la transmitían al resto del grupo y, gracias a ello, el ambiente fue muy agradable.

En conclusión, personalmente ha sido una experiencia única que, si no hubiera sido por Xacobeando, quizás no habría realizado nunca. De ella me quedo con la sensación de sentirme útil y que, sin mi ayuda, ni las de los demás participantes, los peregrinos no habrían podido realizar el Camino. También me parece importante destacar su valentía puesto que no han permitido que sus limitaciones les impidan realizar una experiencia como el Camino de Santiago.

This week has been a bit special as we have accompanied the pilgrims of the ASCM group, a socio-cultural association that aims to fully integrate people with disabilities. The group was composed of 5 pilgrims with reduced mobility who were in wheelchairs, their companions and other volunteers. They came from different parts of Spain, such as Jerez de la Frontera and Barcelona, as well as Ferrol.

Xacobeando volunteers were with them during two stages, from the beginning of the Camino in Ferrol to Neda and the second day from Fene to Pontedeume. Our role was to help them to pass through the sections where the accessibility was not the most suitable for them, to take note of those points to locate them on the map and communicate them to the supervisors and to give company and talk during the route.

Although the English Way is one of the most accessible to walk in these conditions, there were several moments when pilgrims had to be pushed up slopes or to pass through cracks in the terrain. Loose soil and rocks were also a problem as they caused wheels to slip or chairs to get stuck. Several of them had problems with their wheelchair batteries, which ran out before the end of the stage and they had to finish the stage in a van.

Despite all these difficulties, the attitude of the pilgrims was admirable because you could see their desire and enthusiasm to do the Camino and they were always making jokes and willing to face any obstacle we encountered. This energy was transmitted to the rest of the group and, thanks to this, the atmosphere was very pleasant.

In conclusion, personally it has been a unique experience that, if it had not been for Xacobeando, perhaps I would never have done it. From it I keep the feeling of feeling useful and that, without my help, nor that of the other participants, the pilgrims would not have been able to do the Camino. I also think it is important to highlight their courage because they have not allowed their limitations to prevent them from carrying out an experience like the Camino de Santiago.

For our stand we brought some posters about Esc and the exhibition, the European flag, some apples and bars and some stickers where we wrote the information about Esc to give the students as a reminder. A lot of people came to know more about the world of volunteering, and most of them didn’t know about this opportunity so we hope to have encouraged someone to take this wonderful path.
