Figurative Language
Topic Sentence: First, Douglass uses figurative language to support his position to end slavery.
Quote 1: "There stood slavery, a stern reality, glaring frightfully upon us,—its robes already crimsoned with the blood of millions," [Excerpt 5, Paragraph 1]
Explanation 1: This is a metaphor because these crimson robes that Douglass is referring to do not actually exist. He uses this to show how brutal slave owners are and to add feeling to his description.
Quote 2: "If at any one time of my life more than another, I was made to drink the bitterest dregs of slavery," [Dregs are the last few, usually unpleasant, sips of a drink] [Excerpt 4, Paragraph 4]
Explanation 2: **NOT DONE**

Slavery is terrible for slaves
Topic Sentence: Douglass's position to end slavery is supported by his idea that slavery is terrible for slaves.
Quote 1: "My mother and I were separated when I was but an infant—before I knew her as my mother." [Excerpt 1, Paragraph 3]
Explanation 1: This is terrible because a mother was not allowed to see her own child directly because of slavery.
Quote 2: "They find less difficulty from the want of beds, than from the want of time to sleep" [Excerpt 2, Paragraph 3]
Explanation 2: At night, the slaves would have to do washing, mending, and cooking before they went to sleep on the hard floor, which was not ideal and made slaves very sleep-deprived and unhealthy.

Slavery corrupts slave holders.
Topic Sentence: The other pillar that supports his position to end slavery is his idea that slavery corrupts slave owners.
Quote 1: "But, alas! this kind heart had but a short time to remain such. The fatal poison of irresponsible power was already in her hands, and soon commenced its infernal work." [Excerpt 3, Paragraph 3]
Explanation 1: Douglass's owner had finally caught on to her power and started abusing it because there were no restrictions on what one could command a slave to do.
Quote 2: "That cheerful eye, under the influence of slavery, soon became red with rage" [Excerpt 3, Paragraph 3]
Explanation 2: His owner's personality became more cruel and unfair toward Douglass, which was directly caused by her owning a slave.

Hook: Imagine being forced to perform hard labor tasks every day for no reward and be treated horribly. This was the early life of Frederick Douglass.
Background Information: Fredrick Douglass was born into slavery and learned to read and write after a long struggle; as a result, he wrote a book called The Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, which was published in 1845. This was a detailed autobiography of his life.
Thesis Statement: Along with the use of figurative language Douglass uses his story to reveal the effects of slavery on slaves and slaveowners, which supports his position to end slavery.

Topic Sentence: The Narrative opened the eyes of many people to slavery.
Restate Thesis: Frederick Douglass uses his story along with figurative language to show the effects of slavery on slaves and slave holders, which supports his position to end slavery.
Why it matters: This matters because many people at the time of Douglass writing this narrative did not know about the bitterness of slavery.
What makes The Narrative different: Douglass's narrative is different from similar books because he uses beautiful prose and figurative language to strongly back his position to end slavery.
Wrap everything up: To conclude, Frederick Douglass was a free slave that wrote an autobiography. This changed many people's views on slavery by exposing the horrors of it to many white people.
