Advice for why you should protest nonviolently

To effectively protest, you must do so peacefully and respectfully in order to get your message across. The public tend to not listen to the message the violent protestors are advocating for, but rather pay attention to the fact that they are destroying property and causing chaos within the streets; this leads to no progress - only destruction and anger. To protest nonviolently means to peacefully get your message to the public without disrupting the order in society. People tend to listen more to the people respectfully and calmly advocating their cause and will eventually lead to the progress towards resolving the issue.

Steps for an effective, nonviolent protest

In order to protest appropriately yet effectively, you must do so by being nonviolent and respectful. Some steps to successfully go through this process are as follows:

1. Provide and make public a reasonable message to fight for, go out with people and signs and tell what you are doing. Your cause must not be unreasonable, something that cannot be changed, degrading to people and must be morally justifiable. Do not get in people's spaces who are passing by, and do not start fights with people who voice their disagreement.
2. If a passerby happens to start yelling that they disagree with your cause, ignore them. Do not retaliate to them personally. Do not get in their face and argue and yell. Ignore them. By ignoring them you create no emotional response for them to latch onto and fuel their anger, they will eventually see that there is no response and move on.
3. If a passerby calmly voices their disagreement, simply calmly voice yours back. Have a respectful conversation and educate them on your cause and why they may be wrong. The purpose is to get more people on your side to eventually get to the government to do something about it. Peacefully voicing this cause will allow more people to willingly listen and consider the cause, and hopefully start advocating it as well.
4. You must be stern and stick with your message no matter how overwhelming the backlash may be if you want to get anywhere. Stand your guard, keeping holding your signs and gathering others and make known your opinion. Be prepared for violent disagreers, the law, and interrogations. Be passionate and educated on this.
5. Once the government gets involved, respect the authorities and put effort into making them see why they need to do something about your cause.

These 5 steps will aid in the process of peacefully protesting if used correctly.
