How does this Global Issues play out in the novel?

In Purple Hibiscus, the family instead of facing their problems head-on they walk around it and conceal it and try not to talk about it for example, the constant beatings by the father are never mentioned by the family

where is home for you: my family is my home.

I feel that origin plays an enormous role in your identity because your origin indicates your type of culture and culture essentially defines your type of identity. For example, I'm from Somalia and we do things differently there then here like traditional dances, religion etc.. and that is the type of stuff that makes your identity. Yes, there other types of things that can have a huge influence on your identity whether its gaming or habits but most of the type i would say that it always comes back down to your origin. When i say origin it doesn't mean a certain place, it can mean how you were raised, taught.

She still retains a strong Catholic belief liberally based more on that of Aunty Ifeoma's.

When Eugene finds out about the painting of Papa Nnukwu, he right away asks whose is it, and Kambili with no fear in her voice right away answers that it is hers, she even shrieks when Eugene tears up the drawing ignoring her father who is screaming and kicking her to get away from the painting. 

This shows her character development, where we see her fighting for what she wants.

-Papa Nnukwu may be traditionists but the person he is, will forever be a man that prays for the best for his kids. His morals wants to be close to his family which is why he called for that Umunna meeting in hopes to get closer to Eugenes family. That’s why when Kambili and Jaja went to go see him and they left quickly after he didn't say anything like why so soon or stay a little longer instead he was happy with their presence alone. 

Religious symbolism

In purple hibiscus religion can be perceived as a negative aspect by the reader, because it is through Religion that Eugene sees fit that he beats his family and through that he neglects Papa Nnukwu. Although religion is portrayed heavily in the book there are those who are light believers such as Kambili's aunt and there are strict believers like Eugene who adopted the religion from strict catholic mercenaries and people like Father Amadi who believe but won’t throw away their igbo side as stated that he includes  igbo songs into his prayers.

Comparison of Religious Practices

It's been really clear in the book that Eugene is stricter on religion since his style, was adopted form strict catholic mercenaries. he tries to instils everything he sees in the church to his family and when they don’t follow his rules, he sees to it that they get punished severely. While there are others like papa nkunku who is still participates in his Igbo traditions. Aunty Ifeoma practices Catholicism but she includes Igbo into her life,  prayers etc.

Oh, and about the Monkey Theorem? In 2003, a team of researchers in England decided to test it. They took half a dozen macaques and gave them a computer and left them alone for six weeks. The monkeys wrote five pages, total, consisting mostly of the letter “s,” then proceeded to use the keyboard as a toilet…so much for coincidences.

Patrick: What’s so bizarre about Lance Sputnik’s Scorpions story, is that it makes so much sense.

Patrick: This is Klaus in Leningrad, in 1988, a year before the Moscow festival that would inspire Wind of Change.

The band’s first trip behind the iron curtain was Hungary. They played Budapest in 86. Two years later they went to Leningrad. This is Klaus, strolling around the waterfront there, talking to these pasty Russian men who are standing around sunbathing, in speedos.

Patrick: They clearly don’t know what to make of this little, friendly, leather-clad German rocker.

Patrick: In this promotional clip we’re hearing, Klaus goes on to say how amazed he is about how well the Russians know the Scorpions and their music.

The band was originally supposed to play five nights in Leningrad and five nights in Moscow. I actually have a t-shirt, I found this original concert shirt on Ebay, and it lists the dates for both cities, Leningrad and Moscow. But at the last minute, the Kremlin decided the band would not be playing Moscow. The whole idea was just too dangerous. So the Scorpions played a stadium in Leningrad, and just the fact that they could even do that was a sign that things were starting to change, that Russian society was opening up a little, with Michael Gorbechev’s policies of Glasnost and Perestroika. 

Previously, there was really only one place in all of Russia where real rock bands could legally perform. It was called the Leningrad Rock Club, and one night, after one of their stadium shows, the Scorpions took a limousine to the club, to play an impromptu gig.

Patrick: This is them live at a rock club in ‘88..

[Audio]: Klaus: i mean that’s the way we started. That’s the way we started.”

Patrick: In a cramped room thick with cigarette smoke and heaving with rock fans, with a poster of Lenon in on the wall, the band played “Blackout,” slashing their guitars and pumping their fists in the air. But even as they played, they were being watched by the KGB. Because the  had been set up by Russian Intelligence. 

Joanna Stingray: The rock club was put together under the umbrella of the KGB. 

Patrick: This is Joanna Stingray, an american musician and producer who moved to Leningrad in the 1980s and got into the rock scene. 

Joanna Stingray: The musicians were thrilled by the rock club. Every musician I knew knew that the KGB was overseeing it and they didn’t care. 

Patrick: When Joanna first arrived in ‘84, she became friends with members of a couple of Leningrad bands, Kino and Aquarium. This is Aquarium’s 1983 song, “The Art of Being Humble.

Patrick: These guys had a big following in Leningrad. But as Joanna explained, they were still what was called an “underground band.’ If you wanted to play rock n’ roll in Russia, you had two choices. You could be what they called an “official” band, which meant you could release records on vinyl, on the only record label in the country, Melodia, which was run by the state. But you were controlled, basically, by the state.

Joanna Stingray:  You also have to do what they say and go tour all the time and play where they say. You have to have your music or your lyrics censored before you play. Everything is approved ahead of time you better stick to it. 

Patrick: To the guys in Aquarium and Kino, this felt not very rock n’ roll. So the alternative, was to be an underground band. 

Joanna Stingray: Soviets called them ‘amateurs’ that they just weren’t good enough.

Patrick: Amateur bands could only record on tapes, which got distributed on the black market. They had trouble accessing instruments and equipment and venues where they could play. Often, their concerts just happened in private homes, with everybody packed into a little apartment just to see them. Everyone in the Soviet Union had to have a job, by law. But if you were an unofficial band, even a really big one, that didn’t count as a job. So you had to hold down another job just to keep the state off your back. Aquarium’s frontman, Boris Greben-Shikov, worked as a night watchman. Viktor Tsoi, the lead singer of Kino, shoveled coal.

Patrick: This is Tsoi singing one of the band’s biggest hits, “ I Want Changes.” 

The problem, for the Kremlin, was that these guys were good. Good enough that, whatever restrictions the state placed on them, they were building a huge audience. So in 1981, the government had opened the rock club, with the idea that if these guys are going to keep playing, at least let’s have them do it in a place where we can keep an eye on them. 

Joanna Stingray: From the outside it looked like just any apartment building. It didn’t look special from the outside at all, and then you know the inside you went in, it was huge hall with these big seats.

Patrick: Officially, you were supposed to sit in your seats while you watched the show, like you would at the Philharmonic. But Joanna says people would flout the rules and get up and dance.

Joanna: People would be all over, I mean I have a photo where it’s jam packed and people are sitting on the floor all over the place. 

Patrick: The KGB guys wore suits and they stood in the balcony, keeping an eye on everything.

i thought this part was interesting because of how the CIA distributed an action figure of Osama Bin Laden as part of an influence campaign in Pakistan, according to the transcript's opening passage. Code-named "Operation Devil Eyes," the operation is emphasized as a fascinating link between the real-world intelligence activities and the fantastical world of G.I. Joe.The Scorpions' adventures in the Soviet Union are then highlighted, especially their 1988 performance in Leningrad. At first, the Kremlin let them to play in both Leningrad and Moscow, but last-minute choices limited the band's performance to Leningrad alone because of anticipated risks. The performance represented a change in Russian society that was brought forth by the Perestroika and Glasnost programs.

Steven Khalish: Yeah, so after the shrimp boat was seized, you know, we all met back down in the Cayman Islands. 

Patrick: Khalish had to fly back to Curacao to explain to the Colombians what’d happened. 

Steven Khalish: It’s always a precarious situation when you’re going back to the Colombians and telling them you lost 30 thousand pounds of their pot. 

Patrick: But the Colombians were understanding, and proposed that they make up the money they’d lost by arranging for another load… a bigger one. 

Steven Khalish: He said, Let’s double up. 

Patrick: Gift thousand pounds. 

Patrick: Doc wasn’t spooked? I would just think that if the last operation gets busted, y — you might hesitate before going in on the next one.

Steven Khalish: No 

Patrick: What does it even mean? Logistically, I’m just thinking about how, how do you offload 30 thousand pounds of pot? 

Steven Khalish: Well, it depends on where your offload site is. Typically what we would do is bring the shrimp boat up against the bank or to dock, and then we would um set up conveyor systems that would run from the boat into the back of a refrigerated 40 foot tractor trailer. And then we would have anywhere from, depending on the size of the operation, anywhere from 30 to 150 fifty men that would unload the bales from the hold of the shrimp boat, put them on the conveyor systems of within, take them into the refrigerated 40 foot container. 

Howard Johnson's mishap: The transcript opens with a description of Howard Johnson's (HoJo) horse-related mishap. After receiving the original diagnosis that he would never walk again, HoJo overcame his condition and went on to have a prosperous career in the music business.

Background of Doc McGhee: Next, the transcript explores the history of the Scorpions' manager, Doc McGhee. In the 1970s, Doc McGhee was a cocaine smuggler before entering the music industry. The episode delves into his strategy for keeping ties in both realms.

Patrick: That’s what, this is the thing. I mean, it is absolutely serious. That’s a story you’ve never heard of? 

Klaus: No. So I never heard that. 

Patrick: So it’s definitely not true? Like they had nothing to do with it. There’s no way… 

Klaus: No.

Patrick: some random person who they did just shows up –.

Klaus: And I gave it to them?  Maybe I’m a special agent.  

Patrick: Klaus, I got to tell you, I have been wondering this question. This is, I have spent a long time wondering that. So you’re not a special agent? 

Klaus: No. 

Patrick: And there’s definitely no connection with the CIA that you can think of.  

Klaus: No, no. Definitely not. No, that was the only connection, like with a whistling for this lady. This Memphis hotel. Yeah. 

Patrick: But so this is the thing. I mean, it is a nice little anecdote and I can completely see how that would be like the innocent explanation for that story. 

Klaus: That’s a nice story. 

Patrick: But but here’s here’s the thing. If inside the CIA, whether it’s true or not. You know, there are people who believe that they played some hand in that song. Then you can really see the woman coming and saying, hey, will you whistle that for me? You know what I mean? Yeah. Takes on a different meaning. 

Klaus: Yeah. Yeah, absolutely

Patrick: So we went because we’re looking, you know, at this song, but also at other stuff in history. We went and we asked the CIA about certain questions. And there was stuff that they came back and they’re like, no, that’s not true. And so we asked them through the formal process where you can get an answer. We said, did you ever have a relationship with the Scorpions? Is there a connection between the CIA and the Scorpions? They came back and they said, we can neither confirm nor deny. 

Klaus: Really? Really? [laughs]

It is interesting in and of itself to consider the possibility that an intelligence organization may employ a well-known rock song as a tool for covert persuasion. The story is made more mysterious and intriguing by the idea that "half of Russia is whistling Wind of Change, and they don't know why.:

There is additional doubt because Klaus Meine denies having any contact with the CIA or knowledge of such actions. It begs the issue of whether he is truly ignorant of any covert actions or if it's possible that they were carried out without the band members' awareness.

The passage's general tone and the environment's description can hint at things that will happen later in the book. A possible conflict or difficulty that the protagonists could encounter later in the novel is hinted at in this seemingly peaceful scenario with an undercurrent of stress.

There is a power dynamic in the household when the mother offers to pour Papa's tea but never does it. It implies that Papa is in a position of power and dominance and that the mother is playing a subservient role because she offered to pour the tea even if she didn't.

"Thank you, Papa," the daughter's expression of gratitude, gives the scenario a more poignant quality. The expression "feeling the love burn my tongue" alludes to a nuanced emotional reaction. Even if the searing feeling is a sign of potential pain or conflict, the love may be sincere.

We are shown domestic abuse especially in page 38 " when I heard the sounds. Swift, heavy thuds on my parents’ hand-carved
bedroom door. I imagined the door had gotten stuck and Papa was trying to
open it. If I imagined it hard enough, then it would be true. I sat down, closed
my eyes, and started to count."

Eugene beats Beatrice to the point where she loses their baby.

Kambili's struggle with communication and her fear of stuttering indicate her inner conflict and the rigid, controlled environment in which she lives. Her father's strict religious rules and scheduling of every aspect of their lives are highlighted.

Amaka is a forthright and aggressive person, as seen by her interactions with her brother Obiora and her direct questioning of Kambili. She offers a conflicting aspect and diversity of ideas, challenging Kambili's beliefs.

The documentary flee is atypical because there really aren't animated films, and how they capture emotional scenes differently then how it would be shown in live action.
