I thought that the inventions that the fishermen had used back in the day was very interesting because we use inventions and innovations like that to this day, only more advanced. The text claims that the British had used a invention called ed a beam trawl, which was a fishing net that was dragged along the ocean floor. This develops the fact that today we use fishing nets, only bigger and stronger. Also the text states that in ten port of Grimsby they had used the first locomotive. This describes how a locomotive then, is a train nowadays. Overall this shows why I thought that the inventions that the fishermen had used back in the day was very interesting because we use inventions and innovations like that to this day, only more advanced.

Based on my reading of pages 28-33, I found it surprising that there were wars over fish and that people keep inventing ways to fish fish. On page 28, the text claims that many places in Europe fought over fish. Like Holland and England fought over North Sea herring. I found surprising that people keep inventing new ways to fish fish because using the steam boats and the beam trawler is another reason why fish depletion is a thing. Fishermen said that if they see a shortage of fish one area, all they do is go to another area! One day, people will be saying, “hey remember fish? They were good, but they are all gone.”

Based on my reading of pages 26-33, I found it surprising that in the 19th century when the invention of the enginepower was applied to comercial fishing it became a bigger and worse threat to marine life. In the text it says “Not u til then did the changes fishermen were making in the sea become threatening to the entire order of life. The real trouble began when the invention of engine power was applied to commercial fishing.” This was surprising because I thought what mostly brought fish depletion was fishermen and not the invention of the engine power or other electronic items to catch fish.

I found the reasons that herring abandoned their fishing grounds surprising. I found this surprising because the text said that herring abandoned their fishing grounds because fish that are herring had moved into their fishing grounds. Or the fish that they ate had moved away. Or too many birds led to the fish to go away, or driven away the fish that the herring ate. Or all of these things. When it said that, I was overwhelmed by how much ways the herring had abandoned their fishing grounds.

I found it surprising that people invented beam trawlers. I found this surprising because what if there’s a 100 ton blue whale behind your ship and it gets pulled by it or the beam trawler / ship rips. Or if you catch a shark it wil probably eat half the fish or rip the net .I’m surprised that they did not think that through.

I was surprised on how long it took sailors to start using steam power since it would be a lot more efficient to catch fish and make a living. I was also confused on why people didn’t make laws to protect fish earlier because if they started noticing fish going away, they should have done something right away.

This meant that fisherman can remain at sea, fishing for long periods of time.”
