With monopolies ruling America, there needed to be some form of control.  The FTC was also created for this purpose. This act was passed by congress to prevent business practices that would restrict international trade. It also was meant to take down monopolies. While this act came out in 1890, there was no government branch meant to enforce it so it was not effective.
Another big early FTC policy was the Clayton Antitrust Act. It was created to clarify aspects of the former, since enforcing the Sherman Antitrust Act proved to be incredibly difficult even with the FTC. It closed many loopholes found in the prior act. 
Standard oil was the primary target, as well as Andrew Carnegie, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and J.P. Morgan. They have changed quite a bit with the internet and the progression of American business. According to their website, they "[protect] consumers by stopping unfair, deceptive or fraudulent practices in the marketplace."  Also, "It benefits consumers by keeping prices low and the quality and choice of goods and services high."
They also want to to control merges so that there aren't any that cut down competition, affect price and quality, and lessen the need for innovation.
Their goals remain the same. They have to keep an eye on advertisements and businesses found everywhere. This includes the internet, billboards, television,  and magazines. None of these things existed at the FTC's creation, so they have expanded and changed quite a bit. 
The rise of corporations that control so much of the market is also an area they focus on. Companies like Nestle, P&G, Mars, Pfizer, Disney, and Google are omnipotent. The FTC must fight to ensure that smaller businesses still have a chance to compete. Their priorities have changed with these new things in the world, and the FTC is extremely different than it was in the past.

This was the biggest fine ever to be given to a company for a privacy violation. 
They also charged Zoom with lying about a feature just this month. Zoom was guilty and after months of deliberation and changes, the FTC cleared them. 
They will soon address a claim from South Korea that Google's financial systems violate fair trade laws. This is a major claim and will surely have a large-scale impact on Google.
In 2017, they created a policy to regulate the use of voice memos and recordings.

There are also jobs in investigation, research, public affairs, financial management, law, and creation of policies.
