I have experience many problematic encounters with single use plastics, One of these experiences occurred not to long ago.

This experience was when I encountered a bird of prey with a plastic ring entangled around its neck from beer packaging. I managed capture the found and free it from the plastic which would have cause this endangered animal serious damage.

Based from this one encounter with wildlife and single use plastic I can see how detrimental single use plastic is to wildlife.

From reading this article I have found out the shocking truth regarding single use plastics and the terrible impact this has on not only wildlife but the contribution to pollution and greenhouse gasses.

One particular relevent piece of information I found is as follows "In New York, 23 billion plastic bags are used by residents each year." Based on this information I can see that single use plastic bags are causing a massive impact within the eco system and causing pollution. In believe my group should investigate this further as in New York alone throughout a year a massive 23 billion plastic bags are used.

As the battle with single use plastics becomes ever more present in the public eye more designers and scientists are developing new materials and solutions to combat this war.

One of these materials is a biodegradable plastic derived from algae which could eliminate the huge single use plastic bag dilemma. If my group and I could develop a product and utilise a material like this we could combat single use plastics.

On the first of October (2020) yet another major step in the Government’s fight against single-use plastic waste to protect our environment has been taken.
It is estimated we use 4.7 billion plastic straws, 316 million plastic stirrers, and 1.8 billion plastic-stemmed cotton buds in England every year, many of which find their way into our ocean.
By banning the supply of these items, we can further protect our marine wildlife and move one step closer to our ambition of eliminating all avoidable plastic waste.

Bioplastics are plastic materials which are created from biomass, such as straw, animal oils, food waste etc... As opposed to non biodegradable plastics, there's no mining or finite resources.
Currently, bioplastics are not manufactured on a wide scale, but that's an area we should research more in order to come up with a good solution to the single use plastic problem.

On 1st October 2020, a variety of single use plastics have been banned by the UK government.

"In 2017 we found an average of 31 cotton bud sticks per 100 metres of beach, and in 2019 we found just eight on beaches in England. This reflects that many companies have already made the switch away from plastic, in cotton buds and other items, something we need to see more companies doing. "
