Over the years, it has become evident that the education crisis remains an issue in our country. From my own observations, many learners are provided with convenient rather than a truly effective ways of learning. For example, some students are allowed to graduate or move to the next level despite of them struggling with specific areas of learning, such as with numeracy skills, writing, and especially in reading.

As alarming it can get, this issue was further highlighted by the recent PISA results. As a future educator, I am committed to ensuring that my students will receive the quality education before they all graduate, and that this situation should serve as a reminder for us educators to not rely on temporary band-aid solutions. Instead we must strive for lasting improvemnts in our educational system.

The Philippines' dismal performance in the recent PISA 2022 assessment, ranking 78th out of 81 countries in reading proficiency, underscores a critical need for educational reform.

One of the most significant factors for poor reading skill is the presence of weak early literacy skills. Too many children start formal school with poor pre-reading skills, such as phonemic awareness (the capacity to hear and manipulate sounds within words) and print awareness (understanding how written and spoken language are related).

The Philippines' low PISA 2022 results in reading requires a multifaced solutions in improving literacy. As someone who aspires to be a teacher myself, I would priorize building a strong foundation in early literacy by focusing on pre-reading skills like phonemic awareness and print awareness, employing catchy activities and cozy interaction with the parents. I would utilize evidence-based practices such as guided reading and shared reading, interactive read-aloud, and differentiated instruction to address varied learning needs in the classroom. Culturally responsive books that depict Filipino lives would heighten interest levels, and bilingual support (English and Filipino) would result in enhanced literacy overall. Lastly, developing strong relationships with parents and community organizations would give the positive environment to create a love of reading beyond the classroom, which would eventually address the systemic problems that are causing the low reading proficiency.

Based on my observation in our education system, we really need to focus on what our student needs. The only solution that I can see is proper teaching, some teachers are not that dedicated to teach so that they fail to impart the adequate knowledge that student needs, so sometimes the lapses are on the teachers. To improve reading skills among Filipino students, I would focus on making learning fun and engaging. This includes using a variety of teaching methods, like games and storytelling, and providing lots of chances to read different kinds of books and materials. I'd also work to create a supportive classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks. Finally, I'd partner with parents and the community to make sure students have access to books and reading materials at home.

The Philippines ranking 78 out of 81 countries in the result for PISA 2022 showcases the conclusion that approximately 75% of the Filipino students performs lowly in the aspects of mathematics, science, reading and critical thinking according to an article released by EDCOM2. As a future educator, I have observed that it mirrors to the attitude of the average students towards academics and reading as indifferent and lacking.

In order to aid in improving the development of reading proficiency of my future elementary students, I shall aid them by giving them opportunities wherein they can find reading as not only a benefit for them but also an enjoyable experience that can widen their knowledge to areas that they hold interest in. It is to increase their reading comprehension in such young ages without the feeling of pressure by seeing the act of reading and learning as an obligation rather than a fun experience.

Living in the slums where most of the children doesn’t know how to read and write just because their parents can’t afford on getting them in school and of poverty is I think one of the many reasons why our country is among those with lower proficiency in reading.

As a future educator that aims to develop children who are competent and can positively contribute to the society, would like to help those children in the slums by teaching them for free just to help them learn the basics of reading and writing so that even though they can’t afford formal schooling yet they are still capable and not feel that they are being left behind.
