Patriots were people who believed that the treatment they were given by the British was unjust and they wanted to gain their independence and form their own country, The United States. Patriots believed they didn't have the same rights as the British in their country, and were being taxed without representation. Overall, the Patriots' main goal was to gain freedom from British rule. On the other hand, Loyalists were people who lived in the American Colonies but wanted to stay loyal to the British and continue to live as one. They wanted to stay and remain British citizens, even with the unfair laws and taxes put in place, and the lack of representation. These people remained loyal to the British because they believed that their lives would be better if they remained under British rule. Some were simply afraid to stand up against the British, while others had business interests in Great Britain and knew it was better for the economy to stay in Britain. Life for the Loyalists became increasingly difficult throughout the Revolutionary War, as they were in constant danger from radical Patriots. Many of these loyalists lost not only their homes but their businesses. After all the suffering the Loyalists went through, after the war most of them decided to move back to Britain in an attempt to keep continuing their old lives. But even though they moved back, most of them ended up losing almost all they had accomplished beforehand. Overall, the events that took place prove that even though people can be in the same situation, many people choose to interpret it differently. And that's exactly what Loyalists and Patriots did.
