The Proclamation of 1763 was issued by King George III to stop colonial expansion westward. It stated that colonists could not live west of the Appalachian Mountains because Britain wanted the land to stay with Native Americans, who were Britain's allies. Britain wanted to keep Native Americans and colonists away from each other in order to prevent colonists from taking more Native American land, and Native Americans rebelling against the colonists.

The Quartering Act outraged colonists, who felt is was unfair of Britain to force colonists to provide for the British troops. New York Colony preferred to be asked and then give their consent for housing British troops, so they refused to comply with this law.

The Stamp Act, passed in 1765, required all documents in the colonies have a certain stamp on it. Published material, like newspapers, had to be printed on paper with a stamp on it. This stamp could be obtained only if the author of the document paid a tax for it. Also, it could only be paid for with a silver coin, which were rare in the colonies. This act rose the issue that colonists were being taxed without representation in the government.

The Stamp Act Congress, which took place in October 1765 in New York, met to discuss how to deal with the Sugar Act and Stamp Act. Suggested by James Otis, it at first seemed like a failure. Only 9 of the colonies sent delegates to this meeting. This meeting is very important to our American history because this was the first time that colonists came together and debated about how they should react to Parliament's actions. This is where colonists realized that they had similar ideals in mind for the colonies, and took a key step to declaring independence against Britain.

Thomas Preston, who was arrested for manslaughter along with 8 of his troops. All of them were later acquitted from their charges.

This meant that tea that came into the colonies was taxed. While the purpose of this act was not to increase colonist expenses, the expenses went up and colonists became angry, which lead to the Boston Tea Party.
