Some may believe that Beauty’s role as the “hero” in many versions of Beauty and the Beast is a display of attacking patriarchal ideals and empowerment for female characters. However, I believe that it can be argued that oftentimes, her “saving the day” and her motivations for doing so are not as empowering as one may think. By looking at several versions of the famous "Beauty and the Beast" tale, I will explore both why the main character makes her choice, and what these implications mean for feminism in fairytales, and the real world.
