Initial Thoughts

I'm rather eager and excited to delve into this course and see what it has to offer. I'm a little uncertain of what I'll learn overall but it looks very promising that whatever I learn here I'll be able to make some use of later on and in my career somewhere. I feel as though I won't become overwhelmed so long as I remained focused and ensure I spend the necessary time on my studies for both this course and my other courses. I am familiar with the creative process and have lots of experience brainstorming in the past to generate ideas for creative tasks. I also have experience in researching the creation of a project so this should be rather simple and straight forward for me. I have made films before so that area isn't new to me but the use of 'Padlet' is so it'll be a bit of a learning curve but I'm sure I'll manage. I've made websites in the past as well so that shouldn't be to much of a challenge for me either. For my first assignment I've been thinking about creating a promotional video for 'Self defence for Teenagers'. I myself know martial arts and can defend myself but I always talk to my younger friends and they tell me about how they take so many precautions on a day to day bases to protect themself from potential dangers. I have never really thought about this before they told me, so I would now like to make a promotion for teenagers learning how to defend themselves so they can have peace of mind.

I want to aim this promotion at teenagers specifically so they can be prepared for how to protect themselves against possible attackers. I have chosen to do this because I personally believe everyone should know how to defend themself to a certain degree and it's better to learn it as soon as possible. I think that by aiming at both male and female from 13 - 18 would be perfect since both could learn and I would prefer to be inclusive as possible for my approach to this project. It's also a good activity to do to make friends, general fitness, boast confidence and can help teenagers develop other qualities.

Consider Perspectives

Process: To create this video I would need to maintain a focus on the dangers of day to day living for teenagers and ensure I work to that angle. It will be something of a scare tactic with a silver-lining being that yes you may not be able to defend yourself now but if you learn you will be able to. I will ensure that I always think back to if what I'm displaying is practical and could potentially be used by someone to defend themself.

Creativity: I'm thinking that I'd like my promotional video to start of by taking place at night in a parking lot, street or other normal setting making it more realistic for what circumstance a victim would be attacked in. I'd then like to show them getting attacked and not being able to defend themself. This could then lead to a before and after effect of the victim being taught how to defend themself. I might then have the video double back and be attacked again but be able to successfully defend themself this time. Or maybe I could show them side by side in the video at the same time to show what happen if the audience does or doesn't learn how to defend themself.

Facts: Teenagers generally feel unsafe in society by themselves and take pre-cautions constantly to protect themselves. This is good since it can prevent danger or being attacked hence I encourage it. If they were to learn how to defend themself they would be in an even better position because they could then fight if they had to. It is a key skill in life to be able to defend one self and not be harmed by would be perpetrators.

Benefits: Teenagers can also have more peace of mind knowing they can protect themselves from potential risks. This would allow them to take part in activities or spend time together social whilst not being so worried as to whether or not they could protect themself if they got attacked.

Feelings: I feel as though know one should have to live any part of their life in fear and learning self-defense can help with that goal. I know for myself I've never had to worry about if I could defend myself since I learnt it from such a young age and I think it's really important that others learnt to. It also helps with far more areas that just self defence, it helps with social skills, general fitness, confidence and other essential life skills and qualities.

Cautions: The problem with self defence is it can also be used for offence and misused to harm others. I need to ensure that potential learners of martial arts understand the dangers of doing it and the risk they can pose on others if they aren't careful with the skills taught. They also need to understand that even if someone attacked you first the law still applies to you so it's okay to defend yourself within reason but if you go overboard, you may instead be liable for charges.

AIDA Process

Attention: I would like to open with a scare tactic to get the audience hooked immediately latching on to the emotion of fear. I intend to do this by perhaps having a teenager walking fast paced, looking uneasy with foreboding music. In the background a hooded man can be seen to add a sense of danger for the teenager and even though their is no explicit information given that he is a treat but the audience can sense something is wrong.

Interest: I then aim to really get the audience interest hooked by having the teenager being attacked and trying to defend themself but failing. I won't make this to graphic and make it a less brutal version of what could potentially happen as to not upset viewers but none the less it will definitely give them a fright and get them interested as to what they can do to prevent such a thing.

Desire: I then will show a martial arts move that could have been implemented in the situation to help them to defeat the perpetrator. this will generate desire from the audience since they will want to learn the same technique they could use in a similar situation. I will then perhaps show several other techniques as well that could've worked to further drive their desire and make them want to investigate further into the promotion. I could also state what else martial arts provides (confidence, fitness, etc.) so they have more reason to join.

Action: At the end of the video I'll state that people can join the academy and have the logo show on screen as well as some contact details so they are able to join. If I have executed everything correctly than teenagers should want to join or perhaps others may want to join as well.

My intention for how I will create my promotional video are as follows.

Setting: I will have the video shot in a city or town, most likely Murray Bridge or Adelaide at night. I'll either have it on a sidewalk, quiet street or parking lot, somewhere dark but with a street light or some other light source so the audience can see.

Characters: I will require only three actors for this video. I'll need a teenager can be male or female roughly 15 years of age would be ideal, I'll also require them to have a small amount of knowledge in self defence that I'll teach them myself. I'll need a male adult anywhere from 30-50 years of age would be ideal and the more intimidating the better for the purpose of this video. And I myself will also be in this video, I'll be the promoter for the academy and the one who shows the teenager self defence.

Logo: I'll create a fictional logo to be shown at the end of the promotional video. This will be accompanied with some contact details for the audience to follow up if they're interested in joining.

Time Stamps Throughout Video:

0-5 Second Mark: I want to start the action immediately with the teenager walking hastily as though they are trying to get away from something breathing quickly. The video will then show that the teenager is being chased by a man with his hood up remaining silent. This part of the video will have uneasy, foreboding music playing.

5-10 Second Mark: The man will then catch the teenager and attack him. This isn't going to be very graphic just maybe a wrist grab from behind or something else that won't really involve the teenager getting hurt but the situation is still bad. I'll have the teenager struggle for just a little bit and call for help before moving on to the next part of the video. The hooded man will tell the teenager to shut up and try and drag them away. This part of the film will have the uneasy music intensify to capitalize on the danger of the situation.

10-20 Second Mark: The video will then have a flash back to the teenager being taught how to defend himself when in this situation by the academy. This will be may have some quiet action music as well as the self defence teacher talking telling him how to defend himself. This will be a quick demonstration and then cut back to the current situation. The teenager will use the technique on the attacker and then flee. The uneasy music will peak here and then fade out whilst the teenager flees.

20-25 Second Mark: This will transition into me then promoting the academy and saying how by learning self defence, situations such as this can be overcome. This might also have some quiet action music and me talking about the benefits of the academy.

25-30 Second Mark: To conclude the video I'll have the academy's logo and contact information show on the screen so the audience has a means of learning more information or joining the academy. This will have some action music accompanying it until the video finishes.

Tone

The target audience may be curious about learning how to defend themself already but I want to try and compel them to learn it.

I want them to feel shocked and scared initially with the first events that occur in the promotional video.

I will need to convey an uneasy environment with tension if I want to compel my audience my audience. I could also convey a devastating emotion to the audience by striking fear in them with the visuals backed by an uneasy audio.

The colours which best convey these emotion are going to be unsaturated and uncheerful. I want the audience to feel as though this is a typical street environment that they are likely to find themselves in.

Colour Palette 1: The colour palette of the video for this assignment will be mainly a lot of different shades of grey due to the urban environment I intend to film in. My mind map has made me more certain that 'Self Defence for Teenagers' is what I want to focus on for my promotional video. I have identified my target audience and chosen how I would like to approach production of this project. My message will be stronger but I am limited to time in my video so I'll have to keep things concise. My approach will be largely the same but I have some new ideas that should enhance how I develop my video.

I don't imagine I'll use much text in my promotional video and the majority of my message will be conveyed through visuals and audio. I will however be creating a fictional logo for my 'Street Smart Self Defence Academy' that will be including in the promotional video and I think that one of the three fonts listed above would be perfect for the text of the logo. I really want the text to stand out in the logo and be memorable so the audience is more likely to recognize it if they saw it again.

This source displayed a list of simple techniques that can be implemented by victims against the perpetrator to defend themself. Most of which would work and are rather common instances for how most perpetrators go about initializing there attack. I may use a variation of one of the techniques used in this video in my own promotional video.

This was a less serious self defence promotional video however the techniques exhibited here are genuine and would be practical. These techniques are however somewhat advanced and require key movement to use successfully. I might however use a similar technique from here as what can be achieved if self defence is practiced for a longer period of time.

This promotional video is exceptional at showing common circumstance for how fights start and how they can be resolved quickly. This includes basic body language that signal to the perpetrator that they should not fight you as well as how to set yourself up for a fight. This includes positioning of hands and feet and trying to back out of a fight before it happens since prevention is always the first step. I may use my own version of one of the techniques displayed here or the set up for a fight.

This website was great for showing some simple steps that can be taken in everyday life to avoid being attacked or getting into a fight. I will most likely talk about a couple of these in my promotional video or I will show how they can be implemented.

My Personal Experience

This is a photo of my diploma in martial arts, more specifically Karate in the 'Maranda Kai System of National Karate Academies'. I have added this to show that I am experienced in using martial arts myself and so the other promotions and annotations I have done will be based on my own knowledge on whether or not they would actually be practical for self defence. This also means that when I make my own promotional video it will be credible since I have experience in self defence and have a deep understanding of what I will be promoting.

Colour palette

Colour Palette 2: The actors I have in the video will all have distinct costumes to ensure the audience can see the contrast between them and better understand there motives. I'd like to have the attacker wearing as much black as possible with a hood to give an ominous and uneasy impression to the viewers. My victim will be wearing something dark as well but not black, maybe a navy blue to capitalize on the need to wear bright colours so bystanders can easily see you if someone does attack. I myself will also feature in this video and I'll wear mostly neutral colours to inspire a sense of calmness and the audience I can be trusted to help deal with a situation like this.

Colour Palette 3: The colour palette of the Street Smart Self Defence Academy that I use as a logo will be monochromatic to give a neutral calm feeling but then also one other colour. I'd like to use a strong blue to add a sense of trust strength and dependability to the academy and show that it's a reliable place to learn self defence.
