The Use of Devices at JASS

It is very evident that the devices are misused at JASS. Instead of using their devices to complete class work, students use their devices to access social media, and play games. This results in many students being unsuccessful on assignments, failing classes, and lacking the knowledge of the content taught in the course. In a recent survey it illustrated that 70% of JASS students, felt as if devices distracted them during class, and 60% of JASS students felt as if devices impacted their grades in a negative way.

OSAP Loan Cut

Many Low-income families rely on the OSAP loan to send the child to post-secondary. However, now that the OSAP loan has been eliminated, it will make it difficult for low-income families to attend post-secondary. Without the OSAP loan to help students attend post-secondary, students face the question, do they take a government loan? Government loans have to be paid back and now have interest which makes paying back the loan problematic. Furthermore, many students have shared their opinions on the cut of the OSAP loans. For instance, “ Venance Selemani said he pays about $9,000 a year in tuition, an amount he can't cover with his minimum-wage job at a grocery store. He depends on OSAP to make up the shortfall, and worried the changes to the loan program could jeopardize that source of money. It's already a struggle to get. It's a long process."
OSAP Video

Reducing Food Waste

Food waste, has been a major problem for quite some time now. Food waste is evident in schools, parks, malls, and other public places. Wherever you go, you will always find wasted food, laying on floors, tables, and even the streets. Furthermore, many people have been placing garbage in recycling bins. This leads to pieces of garbage being in recycled materials, or in recycling fills, where used plastics, and other recyclable material are recycled and made into products. Garbage takes years to decompose, and if it's sitting in recycling fills, it's not only contaminating the other materials, but is also affecting the fill, as it takes years for the garbage to decompose.

The amount of violence and crimes in the community has been on the rise. Newcomers, are unable to decide what right and wrong, as they are in a whole new environment. Getting mixed up in the wrong crowd leads them to believe , committing crimes, and violence is acceptable, when in reality it is not. Over 2016 there have been over 40,000 criminal offences and over 15,000 charges have been given.

Racism and Racial Profiling in JASS

Racial profiling and racism, have been on the rise in JASS. At JASS, students are often made fun of about things they are not able to control. For instance, students are bullied due to the way they dress, their appearance, they way they speak, and much more. Furthermore, many students are often racially profiled, due to their culture or race, and are treated based on the way they look. For instance, in the United States, many African-Americans are pulled over due to the way they look, which is not fair. Many students who are racially profiled against, suffer from a low self-esteem, confidence, and are self conscious. This is an important issue, as a low self esteem, will prohibit students from trying new thing, and in some cases lead to circumstances worse than a low self-esteem.
