Petrarchan lovers will often fall in love with a high-status woman from a distance, this is shown when Don Pedro tells Hero he “is Claudio, and in her bosom [he] unclasped [his] heart” (Shakespeare 1) during the masquerade party. This is so that Claudio can be forward about his feelings for Hero without ever having to talk to her. This is shown in my instagram story through the fact that Don Pedro is asking her instead of Claudio, and how he is finger crossed that it works. I made sure not to include Claudio at all since he wasn’t part of the moment. Another rule petrarchan lovers follow is holding the woman to “deity” standards, and when they fall from grace, it greatly upsets the petrarchan lover. So when Don John tricks Claudio into thinking that Hero was cheating, at their wedding, he insults Hero with “Give not this rotten orange to your friend. She’s but the sign and semblance of her honor” (Shakespeare 3) and gives Hero back to her father. This shows how he is deeply hurt by Hero, how he feels betrayed. This is shown in my Instagram story by the image of Hero and Borachio kissing with red, angry emojis. He is what you would call the "Petrarchan lover" by the way he shows his love to Hero. For one of the songs that shows his way of expressing his love, I decided to use the song 'Can't Help Falling in Love' by none other than Elvis Presley. This song is meant for when Claudio first ever sees Hero. Most people would call it love at first sight. It shows how Claudio wants to be in love with Hero but isn't sure if he is able to. The quote "I would scarce trust myself, though I had sworn the contrary, if Hero would be my wife," (Shakespeare 1) proves that he loves Hero and wants to take her hand in marriage. In addition to that song, Claudio starts to have mixed feelings towards Hero as the play moves on. Don John comes up with a plan to destroy Hero and Claudio's marriage. Claudio is mistaken about the person he thought was 'Hero' and decides to leave her at the altar. Leonato is convinced to say Hero died from an innocent broken heart. Later on in the play, everybody figures out that Hero is innocent and Claudio starts to mourn her. The song 'Bruises' by Lewis Capaldi shows a deeper meaning of regret. He says the lyrics "and every breath that i've been takin', since you left feels like a waste on me." Which an show how badly Claudio regrets doing what he did to Hero when he assumed that she was guilty of cheating on him. What Capaldi means by left is that the person died which is what Claudio believes happened that leads to the huge remorse he has placed on himself. The quote "Sweet Hero! now thy image doth appear. In the rare semblance that I loved it first," (Shakespeare 4) suggests that he his mourning her death when realizing she "died" innocent. He is the typical Petrarchan lover, with his passionate but distant love for Hero. In the beginning of the play when he was talking with Claudio he says, "I would scarce trust myself"(Shakespeare I, 1, 175)(How do I even cite a play?) which demonstrates that he is nervous with how to handle his feelings for Hero. To show this unsure side of him, I chose to include roses that he may or may not ever give her, and "How to get girls" guides. These reflect way he pines for Hero without talking to her, anxious about impressing her, so I thought that he would try to use someone else's tips for getting close with her.  Also, Claudio is thankful when asked for help. An example of this is when Don Pedro decides to wingman him, where he says, "How sweetly you do minister to love, That know love’s grief by his complexion!"(Shakespeare Act I, 1, 250) which basically means that he is glad that Don Pedro is taking him seriously and helping him get Hero. Because of this, I chose a gift pack to represent his gratitude for Don Pedro.
