Loiusana Purchase (1803)

In 1803, the United States bought a huge chunk of land from France for $15 million. This land deal, called the Louisiana Purchase, made the country twice as big as it was before. This land included Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Kansas, and some parts of Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Minnesota.

Lewis and Clark Expedition (1804-1806)

The Lewis and Clark Expedition, also called the Corps of Discovery, was a two-year journey to explore the Louisiana Territory and the Pacific Northwest. President Thomas Jefferson sent them on this adventure in 1803.

It said that Native American tribes had to move from their homes in the southeastern United States to a place called Indian Territory, which is now Oklahoma. Abraham Lincoln (1809)

Abraham was a strong advocate for the Thirteenth Amendment, which officially abolished slavery.

Harriet Tubman (1822)

American abolitionist and social activist Armainta Ross also known as Harriet Tubman was born on March 1822. Harriet is known for escaping and rescuing 70 enslaved people including her family and friends. She saved them through the Underground Railroad which was a network of antislavery activists and safe houses. Years later, she became an activist in the movement for women’s suffrage.

Frederick Douglass (1817)

Frederick Douglass, a man who was once enslaved, managed to escape from slavery. He then became a well-known activist, writer, and speaker, advocating for the abolitionist movement and the rights of freed slaves. Born in Maryland around 1817 or 1818, he was unfortunately separated from his mother when he was young.

Sacagawea

Sacagawea, born in approximately 1788 to a Shoshone chief, was taken by an enemy tribe when she was about 12 years old and later sold to a French-Canadian trapper. She gained recognition for her role as an interpreter and guide during the 1804 Lewis and Clark expedition, a remarkable 8,000-mile voyage through the American West.

Dred Scott

Dred Scott, born in 1799, was an African American man who was enslaved. He and his wife, Harriet, tried to sue for their freedom and the freedom of their two daughters, Eliza and Lizzie. Unfortunately, they were unsuccessful in the Dred Scott v. Sandford case of 1857, which is commonly referred to as the "Dred Scott decision".
