"Sure, Vienna around the turn of the century was full of other types of music, but what other genres had such temples in which to worship? "- Sara Haefeli

Whats is the Western Canon?

To me, the western canon is music that has moved audiences, successfully communicated ideas, provoked thoughts, and most importantly has been influential. The influential part is the most important because if a piece isn't, then it wont be remembered as it wont have any impact on future music. Classical music has dominated the Western Canon because it has been the most powerful and influential music of Western Society. One thing that struck me from reading "If History Is Written by the Victors" is that entire buildings (which are art in their own respect) were constructed for the purposes of playing classical music, no other type of music has that. The Western Canon would include composers such as Mozart, Beethoven, Bach, Chopin, Vivaldi, ect. The reason I define the Western Canon as such is because classical music is the "victor". I say "victor" because this music was the most important of its day and still is. Classical music is the clear "victor", because still to this day we hear the works of the composers mentioned earlier and still to this day we have composers/musicians of classical music that are influenced from earlier works. Therefore, I can say with certainty that the Western Canon of Music is composed of classical music.

In this padlet, I have provided quotes, songs (works of composers), and other media so that you too can see my perspective of the Western Musical Canon.

These "venues" for classical music is what sets the music apart from other music. The venues for classical music in those days (and even today) are filled with art and prestige, even the buildings themselves are architectural masterpieces.

I often pass through the Union, whether its going to class or going to work. In the Union sits a piano underneath the stairs, and sometimes when I pass near the area I can hear the echos of the piano. I don't know what is being played most of the time but I can appreciate the patience it takes to learn to play such an instrument.
