Post 1: Character Traits~Beneatha

Confident

" ASAGAI: For a woman it should be enough. BENEATHA: I know – because that’s what it says in all the novels that men write. But it isn’t. Go ahead and laugh – but I’m not interested in being someone’s little episode in America or – (With feminine vengeance) – one of them!" (p.38).

This quote shows Beneatha is confident, because she does not care that Asagai does not see her as every other woman. She doesn't want to be like everybody else, she want's to be different and not like every other American. Beneatha wants to write her own story and do what she wants to do, and not have her story written like people want it. She may like Asagai but she's not going to let his opinion of her tell her what she should with her life. Asagai states that looking pretty should be enough for a woman instead of having values and confidence about herself. Beneatha want's to have her own life and do what she wants without being judged.

Driven

"…But first I’m going to be a doctor, and George, for one, still thinks that’s pretty funny. I couldn’t be bothered with that. I’m going to be a doctor and everybody around here better understand that!”(p.50).

This quote shows Beneatha is driven, because doesn't care what other people think about her choices. Beneatha is only focused on achieving her goal of becoming a doctor. She doesn't want to be side track with people who don't understand her, and only want to tell her why her goal is terrible idea. She doesn't want to be labeled as every other woman who marries, starts a family, and get's a job as nurse. She wants to be different and someone who doesn't follow genera stereotypes of women.

My personal opinion on Beneatha is she is very strong woman who won't take anyone's bad opinions of her. I admire that because of her background and race she won't let anyone tell her what she can and can't do. Beneatha want's to find more about her about herself instead of being a typical woman in that period of time. I think Beneatha is a good person because she only wants to do good for herself, and not the people around her. I sympathize Beneatha because people want to tear her down about her goal of being a doctor, instead of trying of encouraging her.

The art is trying to convey that the woman is very free spirited and doesn't have a care in the world. She enjoying life and living to the fullest. She is enjoying nature and just living life without a care in the world. The blue blending into the bright yellow represents being calm and happy. How the art connects to Beneatha is because I believe her to be free spirted and opened minded, especially with her ambition of being a doctor. The picture relates to her just living her life with the choices she makes, without anyone's judgement.

This poem relates to Beneatha because she went through a lot going from not having a lot of money, men throwing themselves at her, and her family not supporting her choices. She want's so be a strong independent woman and doesn't want to rely on any man, to take any of her ambitions or goals away. Her family doesn't support her decision, but Benetha think it'll be good for her. At one point she thought she should give, and that it's pointless for someone like her to become a doctor. In lines 6-8 "a strong woman is both soft and power full, she is both practical and spiritual." She is independent and that could make her vulnerable yet powerful. In line 1-5 it explains that woman who love hard add to her sadness and joy, but also he sadness is what makes her stronger.

The lyrics that I choose relate to Beneatha because the song explains how he doesn't want to lose sight of his true self. How the lyrics relate to Beneatha is she doesn't want to lose sight of her goals, and she has changed her values throughout the years. Her family tries to shame her about it, but she doesn't think anything by it, because it made her whole she is. Line 1-3 state "You stay true to yourself, changing isn't a bad thing it never was, but at end of the day your the same person." Also Beneatha just wants to know who she is as a person and not follow the general stereotype for woman. Line 8-11 "I really wanna understand, I just gotta understand(yeah, yeah), Now i just need to , I need to understand, I really wanna understand oh who I am." Beneatha just wants to follow her goal of becoming a doctor, and not worry about other people's opinion, but what makes her happy as a person.

Post 8: Theme

The theme in "A Raisin in the Sun" could be generational differences, because the views that Mama has are way different than Walter and Beneatha. Walter and Beneatha want more for themselves, while Mama thinks that things shouldn't change work and family wise. Beneatha wants to become a doctor, while Mama thinks she should just get married, start a family, and become a nurse like any other woman. The theme "Fences" is trapped because Troy and Rose were caught in this constant cycle, that Troy cheated and Rose put her own needs aside. I would say trapped because both were stuck in this state of worrying about money, and not the well being of each other and themselves.

How both themes relate to each other is because both are caught up in money and pleasing other people, that they don't have time to worry about what they want for themselves. Beneatha was going to give up on wanting to be a doctor because Walter gave away the money to help pay for it. Money was tor Troy and Rose apart is because he was so consumed about making money, he didn't help to think about his actions affecting other people. Both themes relate to the idea of having undying worry about certain things, but to a certain point where you still have time for yourself. Beneatha wanted to achieve her goal even though her family thought it was a bad idea. In both stories the charcters got consumed in this loop where each one forgot to think about themselves.
