One event that occurred was  when he came across sirens. Even though he knew he shouldn't listen to their song he still did. Odysseus used beeswax earplugs to prevent his crew members from falling under the Siren's spell. While nothing happened due to Odysseus listening to the song, things could have ended badly.

One is when they landed on the land of the lotus-eaters. Three of his men went to see the area, but ended up eating a lotus flower which made them so they didn't want to leave the land. Odysseus took the responsibility of his men and ventured out to find and drag his men back onto the ships. He lost his men on the way. When there was a challenge Odysseus always put his men first. One of the tests that Odysseus and his men face is having to make it through Scylla and Charybdis. He had to make the hard decision of not telling his crew about the monsters so that only a few would die rather than all of them. While it may seem cruel it was just what he had to do to keep as many of his men safe as best as he could.
