It is very important to know how to properly refuse, negotiate and collaborate in order to make healthy decisions for you and those around you. Negotiation is important to maintain healthy relationships and be able to compromise on important decisions being made in your life. " Without negotiation, such conflicts may lead to argument and resentment resulting in one or all of the parties feeling dissatisfied. " (pg 7). You also need to be able to refuse and stand up for yourself even if it the "uncool" thing to do. It is especially important in dangerous situations where alcohol or drugs are in use. " Most people don’t want to risk making others feel bad, but it’s important to stand up for yourself. " (pg 6). A very important part of negotiation is a win-win outcome so both parties are satisfied and this can lead to not only other negotiations in the future but also a healthier relationship. " This stage focuses on what is termed a 'win-win' outcome where both sides feel they have gained something positive through the process of negotiation and both sides feel their point of view has been taken into consideration. " (pg 7). A time in my life when I had to negotiate was with my guidance counselor. She thought I shouldn't be taking so many classes without a study hall, especially with my extra curricular schedule. We were able to compromise on which class I would drop in favor of a study hall and it has worked out great. I dropped the idea of taking AP Spanish 4 and took a study hall. I now know she was right because even as it is now I am still struggling to keep up with my coursework.
