Treating DVT's have the goal of preventing the blood clot from increasing in size or not breaking loose because it can cause pulmonary embolism.
Best treatments:
*Blood Thinners:
Also known as anticoagulants, these actually do not thin out the blood. Instead, these drugs decrease the body's ability to clot. Anticoagulants do not dissolve the or breakup existing blood clots but prevent them from breaking up or increasing in size. The drugs can be taken in the form of the pill or can be injected into the body.
*Clot Busters:
Typically used for more serious cases of blood clots inside the body. If other treatments are not effective, doctors will prescribe clot busters to the victim which cause the blood clots to break of quickly. However, a side effect being that it can cause serious bleeding thus being the cause doctors only prescribe them for the most serious cases.
*Filters:
If any medication can not be taken for any reason, filters may have to be installed or inserted into a large vein. Specifically, the vena cava in the abdomen. It prevents any clots from breaking off and goes to your lungs.
*Compression Stockings:
These stockings help prevent swelling in the legs, and will prevents the blood from clotting as much or at all.

*Pulmonary Embolism:
This occurs when the blood clot gets loose from the vein it is attached to. It lodges into the lungs, preventing any bloodstream and blocking out the lung artery.
*Post-thrombotic Syndrome:
As a result from a clot being inside the vein too long, it can result in damage to the valves. Valves that do not work properly, permit the blood to back-flow and pool, instead of pushing it towards the heart. Usually, the symptoms may be noticed till years later and causes significant side-effects.

The future of the patient depends on their experience with DVT.
In some cases:
*The individuals who have a first episode of this will have a recurrent event.
* Without any anticoagulants, the risk of it occurring again is believed to be 50% within three months of a PE, a Pulmonary Embolism, a follow up to a clot coming loose.
* The risk of a EP is higher, and thrombosis of the iliofemoral veins carries a worse prognosis because the increased incidence with post thrombotic syndrome.
Additional Prognosis Information:
* Without appropriate treatment, the less extreme cases of deep vein thrombosis has a fatal PE risk of 3%. Upper extremity DVT is rare. Recurrent events is lower for patients with risk factors such as surgery, trauma, and temporary immobility. However, significantly higher for patients with risk factors such as cancer, idiopathic DVT, or incomplete resolution of previous DVT's.
