Arabella's mother was sick and died, and her dad dropped her off to live with her grandmother because he thought her life would be better there. Her dad soon became a drug adict and joined the civil war. Shortly after, she got a job at the White House as a seamstress with Mrs.Keckley. President Lincoln was president at the time. She met Steven at the White house. "The theater, Bella," she whispered through fever - dried lips. "Don’t forget the theater. I was never able to be on the stage, but you have the looks of a star." She stroked my hair until someone led me away.” Pg. 4

When Wilkes's plan finally came together to kill president Lincoln and save the south, he shot the President in Ford's theatre during a play. This plan was carried out while the audience was laughing. Arabella could do nothing to stop Wilkes because Wilkes had trapped her in a chifferobe. Arabella feared that she would die from the lack of air, but Wilkes was nice enough to put holes in the wood for her to breathe. After killing Lincoln, Wilkes fled Washington with a broken leg, asking for help along the way. "I knew the play, knew when the laughs would cover sounds. When the laugh I waited for came, I slipped inside. I waited for the next big laugh, quickly took the revolver from my pocket, aimed, and fired." pg 184.

Wilkes was chsaed through the countryside and was eventually shot and killed. Before Wilkes died he wrote down everything that happened and why he did it. Arabella was extreamly guilty of what she had done. She thought that the murder of president Lincoln was her fault. She also thought that Steven would never forgive her for what she had done."He did touch my hand then."I could never hate you, Bella. I'm stunned. I can't deny that. Of all things i thought, I never imagined---". pg 203

Arabella saw Steven at a play that she got into. At first she was afraid if he would notice her or not. But after the play, Steven and Arabella meet up and question if they should still be friends, or should they be more than that . Arabella confesses that she helped Wilkes in his plan to kill Lincoln as well as her involvement in the murder to the authorities. Luckily the guy that she talked to let her go because it would be of no use to put a young girl in prison. But even after that Steven still forgives her , and they move on with life like nothing ever happened."Mr. Ford," I said. "Could I go in?" I swallowed hard. "For just a minuete?" I'd like to see ..." pg 207

Young Arabella meets Wilkes Booth, a famous actor and Southern supporter. She starts to like Wilkes thinking he's an amzing actor and an all around good guy. Arabella continues to work at the White House, sowing with Mrs. Keckeley for Mrs. Lincoln. This gave Wilkes a twisted, wonderful idea to use Arabella to kill President Lincoln and give the Southerners the upper hand in the war. "The president did not even notice me, only looked over me just as he looks over all of humanity, unfeeling. "You will notice me, Mr. Lincoln!" I said under my breath. "You will notice me." pg 116
