Compared to the Great Pyramids of Giza, this temple is completely different in structure (step-based, with shrines at the top rather than within), and in purpose. While the Great Pyramids of Giza housed royal remains, the Templo Mayor acted a shrine of worship for two gods in particular. However, the pyramidal purpose of "reaching the higher Heavens" is the same with both architectural structures.
