She finds out after mindlessly eating a poisoned candy at Ascension. Katharine and other poisoners see this as a threat to their people.

~ Jules, Arsinoe's best friend is seen as their rightful queen (not Katharine), because of her power and patterns from history. This leads to conflict b/w Jules and Katharine

~Because of the point above, the third book ends with Jules and Katharine meeting up with their people, preparing for a war. Neither of them die, after Katharine slits Jules mother's throat, and they both run away. 

~The most shocking one for me is at the very end of the book, when Pietyr tries to use dark magic to take out the 'evilness' out of Katharine, and she seems to die.
