My aim in this class is to get an A. Like most things, I try to stay on target with a full course load. I work a lot, but when school time comes around, it's time to lock down and study. My sights are set on a Bachelor's degree. Staying on top of coursework every week and giving 100% in class will surely lead to a bullseye!

This week I learned about SWOT analyses. I have learned about SWOT in a previous class, but researching In-N-Out gave me a better understanding of why it is useful. There are strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats in every aspect of life. Applying SWOT to business and management helps to see clearly which aspects of said business need improvement, and which areas are most beneficial. I've never been to In-N-Out before, but after the SWOT project, I'm craving their burgers. I will be considering the SWOTs of everything now.

This week I considered the organizational structure and cultures of organizations. All organizations will have a structure, but some may be more organized than others. A company with more members will usually need strict organization to succeed. A company's culture also affects organization. Culture is the mindset of a company and how well the members of the company share the same vision, or goal. Culture is also the attitude an organization creates. If a company lacks organization, communication between different levels of an organizational structure will become distant, which is why structure and communication are key. The culture of an organization is the soul of a company and the structure is like it's skeleton.

This week I considered the different aspects of managing a group. Managers have a lot of responsibility when it comes to hiring or forming a group, and being able to lead the group effectively. A manager can accelerate the different stages of team development through effective motivational techniques. Management takes intense interpersonal skills because it is all about organizing people. Communication is the most effective tool in managing a team. Formal and informal communication are needed to project your ideas and directives clearly. Advancements and incentives that will motivate your team will help your whole organization grow in the long run. People are your most important resource as a manager. Creating a cooperative environment, while still retaining control of your workforce is a manager's greatest task.

This week I considered the elements of being a manager and a leader. There are many different styles of management that have different benefits in different types of groups. To be an effective manager, you must be an effective leader as well. Being a manager doesn't mean you are a leader. Leadership takes good communication and interpersonal skills. Leadership means putting your team's success before your own personal goals. Motivating your team is important as a manager, because your team is the driving force of your company. With the right motivation, your team can produce outstanding results. With little or ineffective motivation, your team will likely become dysfunctional. The type of motivational strategies a manager uses are reflective of his or her leadership style.

This week I considered the value of controlling the performance of your workforce as a manager. To have a productive workforce, one must obtain data about the current market environment. You must compare the productivity and production quality of your own company to your industry's standards. As a manager your must learn the to use your power and control. A manager's power is the authority they possess through their position and relationship with their workers. Control is effectively guiding your team to accomplish the results of your organizational planning.

This week I learned about the basics of management. There are 4 elements to management: Planning, Organizing, Influencing, and Controlling. All of these elements are based on your ability to work with people and other organizational resources to accomplish organizational goals. There are also different types of managers who require different skills for different roles and goals.

This week I learned about business ethics. Business ethics are the study and evaluation of decision making by businesses according to moral concepts and judgments, or the accepted principles of right and wrong. Since the 1890s the US government has been regulating business ethics with laws regarding discrimination, unfair trade practices, and contingency in the case of whistleblowing. Communication is important in business ethics not only for your workforce, but for the public as well. Social responsibility is doing the right and ethical thing for the community you work in. Social responsibility greatly affects public image and your company's reputation.

This week I learned about international business and multinational corporations. Since different countries have different laws regarding commerce and trade, a manager must be knowledgeable about foreign markets when managing a multinational business. Culture, language, country laws, and trade agreements are things to consider when managing a business beyond your borders. Doing business between countries is risky, but there are great benefits to an expanded market. The World Trade Organization is a group of 147 countries who manage the rules of trade between countries.
