For this media report, I've chosen a specific artist, and genre. The artist I've chosen is Taylor Swift, and her genre is pop is much different than that of other pop-stars. Swift's genre of pop is something I like to call petty pop, product of bad relationships or petty feuds.

Well, for starters, Taylor Swift is known to throw shade at other artists, and past boyfriends. Her infamous "I Knew You Were Trouble" was reportedly about Harry Styles, and the song "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" I featured in my media report is reportedly about actor Jake Gyllenhaal. Her song "Bad Blood, is reportedly throwing shade at Katy Perry. To make profit and spark tabloid gossip, Swift relies on songs that are directed at people, without naming any specific names. It's quite sad that a talented artist like Swift is using her platform to engage in petty feuds with other famous figures.

Another song that speaks of a relationship gone wrong, Taylor relies on indirect lyrics, and even a Jake Gyllenhaal lookalike to spark speculation and gossip as to who the song is about, which makes us want to listen to it even more.

Obviously, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together was one of the best selling songs of the summer of 2012. This song didn't have much of a social impact, only that it made people sing along to it in the car.
Instead of using her platform for good, to promote awareness about issues that directly affect her fans, such as sexual assault, LGBTQ rights, and minority rights, Swift instead relies on petty feuds to make her millions. 1 and 2 years later, Bad Blood was recognized with many awards, and years later, Swift is still making songs about petty feuds.

Below, Lady Gaga, one of the biggest and most influential women of this century, using her platform to promote awareness on sexual assault on college campuses. She put on a tear-jerking performance of "Til It Happens To You" at the 2016 Oscars. She was then joined by survivors of sexual assault on stage. Now, compare this to Taylor Swift's image. It almost doesn't compare, Gaga is using her platform to promote awareness on an issue that she and her fans have been personally affected by.

After completing this assignment, I haven't changed my mind on the kind of genre Taylor Swift has morphed mainstream pop music into. In fact, I've done quite the opposite. After researching how many stars have performed tributes, or wrote songs about issues that affected them and their fans, I respect Taylor even less. So many artists have used their platforms to promote awareness, to spread messages of love and acceptance, all while Taylor Swift continues to engage in petty feuds and make petty break-up songs about her ex-boyfriends.
