The subject of food may raise different impressions for people in different countries .For the citzen in a developed country ,it may mean a decision as to what to eat and the pleasures he had eating good food. However,to a malnourished peasant in a poor country ,food symbolizes the scare necessity which must he provide for to keep himself and his family from starving .
One's impression of food may again be influenced by one's culture .To an Indian, whenever he thinks of it,food must be a basic meal of rice or wheat flavoured by spices and curry.Europeans on the other hand ,cannot imagine eating without sandwiches made of bread ,salad and meat.Even in a country such as China, the Chinese have surprising differences as to food preferences .The Northern Chinese have as their staple carbohydrate dish, one made out of wheat (bun or noodles ),but the Southern Chinese prefer rice.
Food ,whether for man and animal ,is anything edible in the Plant or Animal Kingdom. For man,a major step in his food history occurred when he discovered that fire was able to cook the food .Suddenly ,the range of foods to him was vastly extended .His food also became tastier .
For all creatures, food is necessary as it supplies the calories which are burnt when energy is expended in work.Food is also needed for growth and the general well-being of the body.Without food ,all creatures will die.
Man not only needs food but the right nutritional mix of carbohydrate ,proteins ,vitamins and minerals as well.Bread provides carbohydrates, protein can be derived from meat and vitamins and minerals can be found in fruits and vegetables .There are food consultants who can advise man on the right kinds of food.
There is a whole industry devoted to the production, storage and distribution of food .Raw food in the form of crops or livestock is grown or reared on land or man-made structures .The ingenuity of man is such that he is able to make desert lands fertile by irrigation or drain unproductive swamps to form arable land.Man is now using his scientific knowledge and expertise to produce hydroponic crops ,genetically modified food and new strains of crops.
In fact,a miracle strain rice has eased starvation fears of a considerable number of people in the world. The tremendous increase of food production brought about by man's knowledge and capabilities in technology has meant increases in food supplies .This helps the burden of an increasing world population.
However.sometimes food supplies do not meet the markets where there is demand .Corrupt politicians withhold food aid,or farmers us their voting clout to lobby for Governments to restrict cheaper food supplies from elsewhere .
The importance of food is seen in the way food terms have been crept into man's cultures .In the past ,the Chinese greeted each other by asking ,"Have you eaten?"An Arab in thee dessert ,showing his nomadic hospitality ,will share half of his food with passing stranger he has invited into his dwelling .
As the saying goes,'One man's meat is another man's poison,as far as food is concerned .This love to eat fried insects from which they obtain valuable minerals ,Germans love their pork knuckles while Chinese people lovingly flavor their porridge with black century eggs !For those who are able to eke out a reasonable living on the Earth, their love affair with food will always be an affectionate one!
