Pedometers are small devices that measure the "steps" you take in real time. This can be a great way to help students track their mobility throughout the class or day. It will allow them to quantify their movement and compare or relate that to a goal or standard. This can be used to help them set movement goals as part of a fitness plan!

PE Best Practices with Pedometer

Body Composition or BMI (Body Mass Index) machines are a popular, though fairly inaccurate way of measuring your body fat percentage. Unfortunately the formula for calculating BMI and most bioelectrical impedance tools in reference don't really give you much in the way of useful information. These are actually better suited to show students that some high tech tools can be gimmicky and that they can't believe everything they see or read to combat misinformation and promote a healthy body image.

They come in many varieties!

Heart Rate Monitors show an individual their current heart rate so they don't have to count it themselves! These are a very convenient and fast way to show students how their heart rate changes with different stimuli. There are 2 types, electrical and optical, and if you're wearing a fitness tracker or smartwatch you most likely have an optical heartrate sensor right on your wrist!

Take your pick!

Physical Education teachers can use this to show students a breakdown of their form, a play, or other movements so they can see a visual representation of what they are doing and make corrections accordingly!

Coach's Eye

Okay, here me out! Some of us are very much visual learners and require multiple avenues of seeing a concept before we actually connect the dots. YouTube has a plethora of instructional videos for sports history and overviews, skill cues, exercises, strategies, injuries, and other concepts where the host can show how to use resources you may not have in your school, or just prove to your students that you do, in fact, know what you're talking about!

YouTube.com

A metronome is a device that audibly beeps to a specific cadence you set it to. Perfect if you're helping someone smooth out or increase their running cadence! You can buy a physical one, or use one of the many apps out there for them.

Soundbrenner
