Serbia's response did not satisfy the Austrians, and the two countries went to war. On July 28, 1914, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, launching World War I.
his relatively little struggle between two countries quickly engulfed Germany, Russia, the United Kingdom, and France, owing primarily to Treaties requiring them to protect certain other states. The leading powers of Europe were split into two coalitions: the Triple Entente, which included France, Russia, and Britain, and the Triple Alliance, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy.

The western and eastern fronts swiftly opened along the German and Austria-Hungarian frontiers. Germany launched an attack on Belgium and then France a month into the conflict. Russia launched attacks on both Germany and Austria-Hungary. Austria-Hungary launched an invasion against Serbia. Russia is invaded by Austria-Hungary. The western front became entrenched in central France with the Battle of the Marne and stayed that way for the remainder of the war. The eastern fronts were likewise eventually locked in place. Because Germany duped Russia into believing Turkey had invaded it, the Ottoman Empire was dragged into the battle as well. As a result, Allied operations against the Ottomans in the Mediterranean occupied most of 1915

The war concluded in 1918, when the Central Powers member nations signed Armistice Agreements one by one. As a result of these treaties, Austria-Hungary was divided into various smaller countries. The Big Four, Britain, France, the United States, and Italy, imposed their conditions on the vanquished nations in a series of treaties agreed upon at the German peace treaty, or the Treaty of Versailles. Germany was heavily penalized under the Treaty of Versailles, with costly economic reparations, territorial losses, and harsh limitations on its military development rights.
