In 1869, two different women's suffrage organizations were created due to differences in opinion over the 15th amendment. There was the National Woman Suffrage Association (NWSA) founded by Susan B. Anthony and Cady Elizabeth Stanton, and the American Woman Suffrage Association (AWSA) founded by Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, and Henry Blackwell. The NWSA thought that women should get the right to vote before black men, and that the 15th amendment should include suffrage for women. The AWSA supported it.

The movement for women's suffrage was well-organized and gaining momentum. It was still met with strong resistance from some sectors of the US society. People that were against it were mostly scared they would vote against their occupation. Brewers and distillers assumed women would vote for the prohibition of alcohol, and businesses that employed children would fear they would vote to eliminate child labor.

In response to this ruling, suffragists tried other ways becoming enfranchised. They focused on gaining rights at a state level, and also organized a drive to ratify a new amendment. Appealing to states ended up being successful, and by the ratification of the 19th amendment, women limited voting rights in over half the US States.
