Bartolomeu Dias was born in 1450 and died in 1500. He was born near Lisbon, Portugal. When Dias was in his mid-late thirties he worked for the Portuguese royal court. How Dias obtained his sailing skills is unknown. He was the first sailor to sail around the tip of Africa. He arrived in present day Mossel Bay, South Africa on February 3rd 1488.

He would have traveled farther but his crew ran out of provisions causing him to turn around. Dias named the southern tip of Africa the Cape of Storms after all the storms his crew ran into the name was later changed to Cape of Good Hope by King John II to encourage more travel to the area. Dias didn't sail again until 1500 when he commanded multiple ships on a expeditionary trip. They were the first European's to see Brazil. Sadly Dias died when a storm sunk the ship he was on and he died near the Cape of Good Hope.
