When Kenny had a closer look he could see pencil ticks next to the pictures of the birds his ex-wife (Roxanne) and his kids have seen and next to a picture of a white bird she has written: lover birds, always stick together in pairs.

The language that Clair Atkins has used in this scene is important. For example, when she writes. 
"Lara's ticks are tiny and neat. Jonathan's are oversized and dark.Roxanne's are loopy and flowing, like her handwriting."
This shows us that Kenny is feeling pain from Roxanne leaving him and Jono not speaking to him.

The blunt, off hand way that Zahra breaks this news to Jono hits the reader like a punch to the chest. When we read the line where Jono remembers his farther's words "What do you really know about her anyway" we see that Jono is not as close to Ana as he thought.

The language the author has used in this part of the story is essential. For example, when she writes.
"You  don't know? Her mother is pregnant. Anahita not tell you?".
This scene shows us that Ana has failed to tell Jono that her mother is pregnant and Jono has felt like his connection with Ana is falling apart.

"When i feel how you looked, music is the best medicine. Jono".
when we read this line where Ana reads the note this is a weak at the knees moment.
