Origin

The Cañari mixed with the Inca culture in the 15th century. Later, the Cañari and Inca cultures mixed with the Spaniards as a consequence of their conquest that took place in 1532, in what is known today as the Ecuadorian territory.
geographical location. 
Cañar is one of the 24 provinces that make up the Republic of Ecuador, located in the south of the country, in the geographical area known as the inter-Andean region or highlands, mainly on the Cañar basin. Its administrative capital is the city of Azogues, while the largest and most populated city is La Troncal.
Bordered on the north by the province of Chimborazo, on the south by the province of Azuay and the cantons of Biblián and Azogues, on the east by the canton of Azogues, and on the west by the province of Guayas.


Clothing. 

Cañari women wear skirts of various colors, mainly black, white embroidered blouse, and preferably black reata, with a tupo that gives support to the piece, adorned with red and blue pearl necklaces, silver earrings with motifs of the Cañari worldview.
The indigenous men use a hat made of white sheep wool, hemispherical in shape with a small visor that is adorned with an elegant braid, poncho and pants made of cloth, generally black.


Religion. 

The main gods worshiped by the Cañaris were the Moon and the big trees. The cult of the Sun was introduced, if we are to believe Garcilaso, with the conquest and the dominion of the Incas. Before the Incas, says Garcilaso, the Cañaris worshipped the Moon as their main god, then the large trees and the stones that differed from the common ones, particularly if they were marbled. With the doctrine of the Incas, they worshipped the Sun, to which they made a temple and house of choice.


Gastronomy. 

1. Mellocos : potatoes, mellocos, barley and wheat contrast with the agricultural products of the warm floors such as coffee, rice, sugar cane and fruits. 
2. Cascaritas : roasted and browned pork skin accompanied with mote, llapingacho, salt and chili to taste. 
3. Chicha de Jora: several connoisseurs affirm that chicha was the favorite drink of the Inca nobility, consumed mainly during the Inti Raymi, where the kings toasted with it in honor of the Sun.

Festivities.   

Nowadays the Cañari people, once a year celebrate two great festivities, with the objective of thanking their gods for everything received throughout the year. On the one hand is the feast of Intiraymi or feast of the sun and on the other hand is the Corpus Christi.
