He also thinks very highly of himself and when he sees Rainsford he challenges him, believing that he will win. The text states, " 'two slight annoyances kept him from perfect enjoyment. One was that it would be difficult to replace Ivan; the other was that his quarry had escaped him; of course the American hadn't played the game' - so thought the general as he tasted his after - dinner liqueur"
(Connell 34). Based on the quote, we can see that the general is very confident in himself to the point where he can be described as cocky. We are also shown that the general sees no harm in his ways and seems to diminish the fact that his prey are men simply because they have less than him. A direct characterization given by author to describe him can be seen in the following stated, "another man was coming down the broad marble steps, an erect, slender man in evening clothes...in a cultivated voice marked by a slight accent that gave deliberateness, he said..."
