The path that Hampton will have to choose which will determine the type of person Hampton will become in his life after high school.  
The issue about Hampton having to choose between two friends with different lifestyle is even though Blaine is Hampton best friend they're not really the same as shows in the book is "But outside of playing football, y'all don't seen that much alike"(Tharp 110) which the quote from the text explain the struggle inside of Hampton life that he could go to Sara and become the person who he always wanted to become or Hampton could become someone he not and go with his best friend Blaine.

The theme is shown in the book is that "But here I was anyways with two girls burning up in my mind"(Tharp 94), which the quote show that Hampton has to make a choice between Misty, the girl who Blaine want Hampton to date instead of Sara, or Sara, the girl that Hampton wanted to date.

The lesson that I learned show up in the book is " Blaine snapped his finger and grinned a jackpot-inner grim. I got the perfect candidate. Misty Koonce" (Tharp 46).
