Durant cette période un nouveau mouvement en réaction contre l’Art nouveau voit le jour en France et dans divers pays étrangers comme l’Allemagne, les Pays-Bas ou encore la Belgique. On commence à s’orienter vers des lignes simples, des compositions classiques, en quelque sorte vers un retour à l’ordre et la sobriété. Fini les décorations encombrantes et exubérantes. Cette évolution de goût et de concept est introduite à Bruxelles entre 1905 et 1911, même si on note déjà des signes de passage de l’Art nouveau à l’Art déco dans les travaux d’Henri Bellery-Desfontaines dès 1902-1904. Au fil des ans, l’Art déco s’impose peu à peu.

Dès ses débuts, l’Art déco a été influencé par les formes géométriques audacieuses du cubisme; les couleurs vives du fauvisme et des ballets russes; l’artisanat mis à jour du mobilier des époques de Louis Philippe et de Louis XVI; et les styles exotiques de la Chine et du Japon, de l’Inde, de la Perse, de l’Egypte ancienne et de l’art maya. Il a présenté des matériaux rares et coûteux, tels que l’ébène et l’ivoire, et l’artisanat exquis. Le Chrysler Building et d’autres gratte-ciel de New York construits dans les années 1920 et 1930 sont des monuments de style Art déco.
