Harriet Tubman used the Underground Railroad- an extensive network of secret routes and safe houses that helped fugitive slaves to escape from slavery going North to freedom. The Underground Railroad was conducted by white abolitionists and free African Americans.
----
She also donated a large portion of land to the church so that there could be a shelter for the African Americans who were escaping slavery.

As a girl, she was whipped and scarred at a plantation and at the age of 27, in 1840, Harriet Tubman escaped her abusive master and headed towards freedom. After this, she gave up her life help other African American slaves escape to freedom through the Railroad. She had to sacrifice a lot in her life, but in the end she never left a slave behind to be captured, which makes her an even more interesting figure. She was very successful.

Over 1000 African American slaves successfully made it to freedom with the help of Tubman. She helped transform America, especially in the South.

Susan Burton- at the age of 4 she was sexually abused by a family member, and then at 14 she was gang raped and later had a baby girl. She got involved with a pimp and got involved with crime for 20 years. BUT... she had a turn around, she now leads a nonprofit that helps people to escape poverty and have a chance to start over after prison. Like Tubman, she is an advocate. She is an advocate for ending mass incarceration and drug treatment. Her life is an example of recovery and toughness just like Tubman!
