Church Community- Our church's have given us the lessons/ teachings of how Jesus cared for humanity-- Much of nursing practice is rooted in theory, but as Christian nurses we can compliment nursing theory with our spiritual call to care and practice our professions
Bethel College/ Professors- We all have reasons for choosing Bethel College, but a reoccurring similarity in our responses is that the Christian principles instilled in every class/clinical setting enable us to achieve and learn the most from faith based practices of nursing-Our professors have invested the time into creating a program we are proud to attend and that area facilities respect and admire

As a nurse, it has come to my attention that often times I am dealt the task of dealing with people going through the worst days of their live's. By using my mind, body, and the skills I have learned to preserve their dignity, I am able to help them regain their sense of esteem and respect. Whether it be in death, or pulling through a sickness, the preservation of a person's dignity is one of the most meaningful things to restore a person to health. 
To me, a person with dignity and a sense of identity bigger than their illness/disabilities,  is a person that has overcome the cruelties of this world.
In remembering my own death, I am able to use my skills as a nurse to rob the world of the pleasures of death for my patients.

I strongly believe that every person has a calling. We all have different strengths and weaknesses. God calls us to a field where we can thrive, using our gifts and talents to serve Him. I think this quote says it all perfectly. It goes along with the passages by Dorothy Sayers and Albert Schwietzer. 
Schwietzer encouraged every person to follow their passion no matter what other people said. His family and friends discouraged him from following his passion and told him he should stay where he was at and further his education. It is not our job to tell people what they should be doing with their life because that is God's job. We should support someone to follow that dream, that calling, that passion. Schwietzer (2006) noted, "It amazed me to see them unable to perceive that the desire to serve the love preached by Jesus may sweep a man into a new course of life" (p. 33). Who are we to stop someone from following God's calling? Our purpose is to encourage them as they start this adventure. 
Sayers discusses the question of "Why Work?" She argues that one does not work in order to live; one lives in order to work. I think a lot of people dread going to work every day because they do not love what they do. Sayers argued that one should be so passionate and devoted to their work that they want to go to work every day. A person’s work should be “the thing in which one finds spiritual, mental, and bodily satisfaction, and the medium in which he offers himself to God” (Sayers, 2006, p. 192). 
Individuals who do not pick a job because they love it, but pick a job because of its benefits and money will dread going every day. That is exactly what Sayers and Schweitzer are saying in their passages. That is what this quote is saying. That is what I believe. Find a job that you love, that fulfills you, that allows you to use your gifts and talents to better the kingdom of God.

Nurses should really graduate with a degree in human services alongside their bachelor’s in science and nursing. We are advocates for our patients and it is our job to make sure that their basic human needs are met. Serving others comes with the possibility of having someone else’s baggage thrown at you and nurses must be ready for that. Many times, I have had to play therapist. Whether it be just listening to a patient rant about her ex-husband or providing a “frequent flyer” detox patient resources for locations of alcohol anonymous meetings close to their home. Mental health is just as, if not more, important than physical health.

Should nurses receive a degree in philosophy with a focus in humanity and ethics? Probably. Nurses must make decisions everyday about how to care best for their patients. We are taught that the right thing to do is to care compassionately for all, no matter their background or history. Practicing humanity toward others will defeat prejudice and allow for a more stable society filled with much less hate.

I don't believe that we are "called" to do one particular thing in life. I truly believe that when God created us one by one, He instilled certain gifts and talents that He wanted to use through us. 
As a soon to be nurse, I believe God gave me the heart to want to help people who are ill, the hands to play a part in the healing process, and the brain capacity to take in large amounts of information to save lives. 
I am constantly inspired by the ways that God chooses to use me and the gifts He gave me to do His work here on Earth. To be able to be a part of someone else's life at either the best time or the worst time is a true blessing.
