Since I am basing my idea off cultural differences and unity within, I looked for images that would portray this. I found that most of the images are extremely colourful and loud. This contributed massively to my final project as I will be focusing heavily on colour throughout.

Since my goal is to create a A3 sized poster, I have been experimenting with different ways to represent my idea. This was a simple piece that I created which I think I could develop further and make it more visually appealing. I really like this style of the disformed type with imagery within. Al though the image isn't mind, I found it useful inspiration to what I could possibly do for the final piece. I think that there could be more colours used rather than just blue. There is definitely more I can do to improve on it.

This is the process it took to create this concept idea. Originally I found a workshop on Adobe create which guided me through this poster. I used techniques that I haven't before and actually found them particularly easy. Throughout this process, I actually just freestyled this instead of planning. I had an idea and was keen to just see the outcome. I found that using imagery within type is a great way to represent my idea. It would concentrate on type as that is my initial idea but also have some context through images.

There is no strength without unity poster

This is another experiment I have done using a quote I found about unity. It reads 'There is no strength without unity.' This particular quote was short enough that it was easy to read if walking past it on the street or if seeing it on a t-shirt or hoodie. I really like the simplicity of it, as well as the bright colour yellow. I think this is definitely a piece that could be used as a foundation for the final. I could incorporate the same theme of bright colours and simplicity but add more detail and imagery to expand on it. Currently, I think this poster looks very simple and it was actually very easy therefore I would like to expand and challenge myself more as much as I do really like this piece. I came up with the idea of using several different colours because when looking at cultures, I noticed that colour was a major part of a person's background and culture. Colours tell a story of so many places in the world whether that be through their flags or festivals, it plays a huge part. Therefore I wanted to consider using multiple different colours to represent the many different cultures around the world.

Portrait of Britain - Alfie White

I visited a recent exhibition at the Goldsmiths Centre of Contemporary art and came across many fantastic pieces of work within the mass exhibition named 'Testament'. This exhibition included work from 47 different artists all focusing on the recent tragedies in the past few years during the outbreak of COVID-19. I came across a particular piece by Alfie White which has really inspired me for my final outcome. Alfie White is a photographer which allowed him to create this collage using images taken from the past few years of just random shots or from planned projects. I'm really fond of the style he had chosen to create this collage, all in black and white and in a vintage type style as well as the images being random shots from the streets.

This has inspired me to do something very similar but as an experiment. I aim to use photographs in a similar way to make a collage that can be adapted into type. As an example, for my previous experiment with type, I used imagery within type and that's something that I would like to do again but with my own photographs. I want my images to be in a retro, black and white style using a vintage camera to produce this.

Arthur Jafa - LOVE IS THE MESSAGE, THE MESSAGE IS DEATH

Whilst researching into artists who have defined culture into art, I came across Arthur Jafa. He created this short visual archive of black american life. It is of found video footage and home movies: a police officer shooting an unarmed black man in the back; teens dancing the dougie; President Obama singing “Amazing Grace” at a memorial service for Rev. Clementa C. Pinckney and eight parishioners killed by a white supremacist at Charleston’s Emanuel A.M.E. Church; clips of James Brown, Beyoncé, Martin Luther King Jr., Bayard Rustin, and the Notorious B.I.G.; helicopter footage of the L.A. Riots; and fans swag surfin’ at a basketball game. This video brought goosebumps and tears to my eyes because of the huge affect it has on me. Jafa didn't produce this seven and half minute clip for entertainment nor for non black people to feel entertained and then never watch the clip again. This was to send a message, this was to represent power and pride, to represent the history black people have endured. The 57 year old created this to show the world these archives that have been lost and forgotten due to legacies of slavery and ongoing structural racism.

I found bits of this unnerving to watch but I found it difficult to turn off this video or look away from its truth speaking. This is a collection of images turned into art. The art of pain, I guess, but so compelling and wonderful and horrible all at once.

This was a real big inspiration for me. As soon as I finished watching it, I realised how endured and focused I was. Not till afterwards did I begin processing and trying to understand the message. During, I was just engulfed with what was happening throughout. It is truly a masterpiece and Arthur Jafa is brilliant for it. I want to send a message just like this to the world.

This is the mock up that I created based off my sketches as well as based off inspiration i got through Adobe create. I made this using Illustrator. It was very simply to do as I just used the type tool as well as copy and paste. I wanted to then transfer this into after affects to a short video or gif of the letters bouncing up and down from left to right or right to left. I have never worked in after effects before meaning I opened the software and struggled a lot to navigate myself. I believe that I first need to become familiar with this software before using it for my experimentation. I will look into beginner videos and guides to develop my skills within this field.

Experimentation with Adobe Illustrator - Typography

Here I present a print piece I made through Adobe Illustrator. Let's find the Unity in Diversity. Many of us believe that due to our differences we must divide but I believe that we can find the connection in these differences and unite. I spent time researching into cultures and found similarities that many of us don't initially see or choose to see. When doing this, I noticed that colour plays a huge part in representing ones country or culture. This led me to create this piece filled with these random and bright colours. I created this poster in hopes to reach these people and remind them that we can unite despite everything else. In a world constantly moving, I would like to see more people coming together from all backgrounds and see the similarities easily without having to search for them. Often people need a gentle reminder that this world is shared and more can be done as a united front and as a team rather then alone.

I found several workshops that I had previously used as well as new ones to combine together and create this piece. I used techniques like the splice affect in the word "diversity" and 3D styled typography. I also discovered how to create this seamless pattern as a background for the piece. These new ideas and techniques have helped me to visualise some ideas for the final piece.

My initial mindmap looks at all the ideas and words that I associate with the word 'journey'. These are all words relevant to what my outcome could possibly be and what I will base my outcome off. I look at topics such as travelling, relationships, social, sexuality, unity and culture. From researching into these further, I felt that I resonated heavily with the idea of unity, culture, human connection/interaction and the emotion sonder, as well as using the London tube as a foundation to my ideas. I believe that the connection and interaction between humans is so necessary but many people on this planet don't see it or acknowledge the power of it. Uniting despite differences is a really important element of my idea. I found that the tube is a great example of the lack of human interaction and division. Discovering others and uniting is a journey in itself. Therefore, I will be using the tube as a platform to present my ideas.

The story of the tube

The tube is a huge part of any Londoner's everyday life. It is been used throughout history during wartime and peace and it's played a part in shaping London’s economy, geography, tourism and identity. As we know it, the tube is the foundation of London and millions of people have traveled on this transport system. When it opened in 1863, it became the world’s first passenger underground line. The London underground welcomes around 1.35 billion people yearly which brings in an annual revenue of over 2.5 billion British pounds.

The London Underground may be the most iconic part of Britain but many forget the flaws. When I travel the tube, I notice these small factors about the human nature that has just become so natural to people. It is very well known for people to keep to them selves to the extent where everyone looks down. There is no eye contact and that is just the way it is. This is just the culture for many people. I found the tube an interesting representation of the division between one another. This journey people take on the tube almost everyday, is always in silence. I mean, unless you are with people, many of us sit on our phones, read a book, listen to music or just stare into the distance. I always experience a feeling of sonder when i am on the trains of London. It is very interesting to look around and see so many people whom have these individual and very complex lives just like myself. No one could ever know or understand what is happening in one another's lives whether good or bad, yet we will still see these people on the same exact train, on the same route looking very vacant as if nothing is actually happening in the lives. This is what I would like to focus on. The experience of sonder whilst travelling the London underground. I hope that this might influence people to understand one another better and learn to never underestimate what someone is going through. This is that sense of Unity that may help provide the connection.

The definition of Sonder is incredibly moving and just besutiful. I am sure many people have felt this type of emotion before yet never quite knew a way to describe it.

It is incredibly easy to experience life through our own lens whilst being the center of our own narrative. We often forget that we also play a part in everybody else's lives too, we are a part in someone else's story just as they are in our own. These stories are deeply intertwined and interconnected. In subtle ways and sometime not very subtle ways we influence and impact the trajectories of the people around us, those we have yet to meet and even those we will never get the chance to encounter. Whether you realize it or not, you play a part in an endlessly-unfolding story. Not only that, but you are writing your own script for it.

It is truly beautiful and easy to forget that this is true and huge part of life. Humans are and will always be connected to one another despite these big or small differences.

In relation to the tube, this emotion that is so deeply rooted in us, happens all the time on the tube. It is the perfect place and foundation to show this. We do not see it but the people on these trains that you see everyday or once in your lifetime have affected us and we them. Whether through a smile or just eye contact, this interaction is a part of the ever growing story that we are naturally apart of. Through imagery and type, I will represent this connection.
