SURTINI/01
Ballooning

The first kind of air transportation was not a plane. It was a balloon. People traveled by balloon 100 years before there were planes or jet aircraft. Those early days of ballooning were exciting, but they were also dangerous. Sometimes the balloons fell suddenly. Sometimes they burned. However, the danger did not stop the balloonists.

(1) The first real balloon flight was in France in 1783. Two Frenchmen, the Montgolfier brothers, made a balloon. They filled a very large paper bag with hot air. Hot air is lighter than cold air, so it goes up. The Montgolfier’s hot air balloon went up 1,000 feet in the sky.

(2) Later that same year, two other Frenchmen ascended in the basket under a balloon. They built a fire under the balloon to make the air hot. This made the balloon stay up in the air for a few hours. But their balloon was tied to the ground. So it could not go anywhere.

During the nineteenth century, ballooning became a popular sport. There were balloon races in Europe. Balloons were also used by scientists to study the air and by armies in wartime. After the airplane was invented, people lost interest in balloons. Planes were much faster and easier to control. But some people today still like to go up in balloons. High up in the balloon basket, they find quiet. They have a wonderful view of the world below.

Later this young princess married Joko Seger, who came from a Brahman caste. Because of an unfortunate situation the couple was forced to leave the kingdom. They settled down in the mountain area. They ruled the area and named it "Tengger", which was derived from the couples' names: Roro Anteng and Joko Seger.

After several years the region flourished in prosperity, but Roro Anteng and Joko Seger were unhappy.

Malioboro Street

Malioboro is one of the famous places at Yogyakarta city. But, it turns out Malioboro also has a history. The beginning of Malioboro consist with the founding of Keraton Yogyakarta. In Sanskrit, Malioboro means flower bouquet. Because, Malioboro Street is filled with flowers every time the Yogyakarta Palace (Keraton Yogyakarta) holds a big event. According to another opinion, the word 'Malioboro' has been since for a long time, from a British colonial named Marlborough who had lived in the area around 1811-1816.

Initially, The existence of this road is specially arranged according to the compass point, which is stretching north-south and perpendicular. The pattern was strengthened as an 'imaginary axis' between the South Coast (Parangkusumo Beach), Yogyakarta Palace, and Mount Merapi. Malioboro began to bustle in the colonial era of 1790 when the Dutch government built the Vredeburg fort in 1790 at the southern end of this road. In addition to building fortifications, the Netherlands also built the Dutch Club in 1822, The Dutch Governor's Residence in 1830, Java Bank and the Post Office shortly after. After that Malioboro developed rapidly due
to trade between Dutch people and Tiong Hoa traders. In 1887 Malioboro Street was divided into two with the establishment of a train stop which is now called Tugu Yogya Station.

Other history, Malioboro Street is a witness to the struggle for Indonesian independence. There had been a great battle between the warriors of the Homeland and the Dutch colonial forces who wanted to occupy Yogya. The battle became known as the General Offensive March 1, 1949.

Namely the success of the red and white troops occupying Yogya for six hours and proving to the world that the Indonesian army still exists. Malioboro continues to grow until now. By maintaining its original concept, Malioboro became the center of Yogya people's lives. Cool and comfortable impression arises when entering the park area. Incidentally I visited during the day when the weather was hot-hot.
As the name implies, the design of this park is mostly made of bamboo, ranging from the mosque, seating, lighting, until the bamboo photo gallery in the park.
This place is quite friendly with smokers. There is a special place provided for visitors who smoke so as not to smoke in any place.

lawang sewu
At the beginning of its construction, this building was named Nederlands Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij. Whereas in Javanese, Lawang Sewu means a thousand doors. But just because the name "Lawang Sewu" does not mean this building really has a thousand doors. In fact, Lawang Sewu only has 429 doors. But like most other Dutch buildings, Lawang Sewu has many large windows that when viewed from afar will look like a door. And that is the reason why people refer to this building as "Lawang Sewu".

Unlike now, Lawang Sewu was once the administrative office of the Indische Spoorweg Maatscappij (NIS), a private railroad company from the Netherlands. The first NIS office was at Semarang station, but because the place was insufficient, the Dutch government finally decided to build a new building. The construction of the Indische Spoorweg Maatscappij (NIS) administration office began in 1904 and was completed in 1907. Construction began with excavation of the 4-meter deep soil and then replaced it with a volcanic layer which made the building so earthquake resistant. Behind the frenetic railroad workers, Lawang Sewu also has a dark side that is far from the impression of an office. In addition to the first and second floors functioning as offices, this office also has a basement and third floor. The third floor is an attic and a basement that serves as a prison for prisoners in the colonial period. When Indonesia fell into Japanese hands, this basement and attic became the cruelest prison for the Netherland people. In the early days of Indonesian independence, it did not necessarily make this building fall into Indonesian hands. Lawang Sewu actually turned into a battleground between youth of the Railway Youth Force (AMKA) with Kempetai and Kidobutai soldiers in the Five Days Battle in Semarang from October 14 to October 19, 1945. Because of this history, the Semarang city government established Lawang Sewu as a heritage building history that must be protected.

THE HISTORY OF IJEN CRATER:)

ijen crater is the largest crater in the world, the color of this crater is very beautiful, namely greenish blue, and there are many people who mine sulfur, then the sulfur are sold to the shelter. there are also many pine trees and coffee plantations.

ijen crater which has a depth of 200 m and very wide is very crowded to be visited by people while on vacation, some people are coming with family or groups or with their girlfriend

In the past, the Ijen Mountains were part of the Blambangan State. The name Blambangan was sticking out in history when its king, Menak Jinggo refused to recognize the power of Majapahit. The war between Blambangan and Majapahit gave birth to the story of Menak in the 14th century. The story tells of the struggle of Dhamarwulan, a young man from the common people who became a sickle but was able to kill an enemy of the kingdom, Menak Jinggo. Then,He married Ratu Majapahit, Dewi Kencono Wungu, and became king.

The name Ijen was also mentioned when a prince from the kingdom of Wilis, guerrilla against the VOC from behind the slopes of the Ijen mountains in 1722. Although finally defeated, this story proves Ijen as an ideal hiding place for the rebels. The land is mountainous and filled with dense forests, really scary to outsiders. Haunted impression is so inherent in this no man's land.

Ijen crater began to be touched when the Dutch Company rented vast tracts of land in the Besuki, Panarukan, Probolinggo and surrounding areas to merchants and captains of the Chinese population in the wealthy Surabaya, Han Chan Pit and his brother, Han Ki Ko. To attract workers, they distribute free rice. In a short time, 40,000 workers from Madura arrived. They opened up land, planted rice and vegetables, using a regular irrigation system. But the outbreak of the peasant uprising led by Kiai Mas in 1813 made this rented land repurchased by Rafles.

The Dutch political implementation of culturstelse in the late 19th century forced the reopening of these remote lands, including the Ijen Mountains to become coffee and rubber plantations. Again thousands of workers from Madura were brought in. Then a 'little Madura' was created which became the center of Madurese settlement along with its customs, culture and language. We can still find small Madurese in parts of Jember, Situbondo, Bondowoso and Banyuwangi.

Thus, this area is rich with history.Kota Tua is a remainder of Old Batavia, the first walled settlement of the Dutch in Jakarta area. It was an inner walled city with its own Castle. The area gained importance during the 17th-19th century when it was established as the de facto capital of the Dutch East Indies. Dubbed "The Jewel of Asia" in the 16th century by European sailors, the area was a center of commerce due to its strategic location within the spice trade industry in the archipelago.

Initially, Sunda Kelapa harbor was known as Kalapa and it belonged to Pajajaran kingdom. When an army from Demak and Cirebon took over this area, their leader named Fatahillah built a town surrounding the harbor. The town was named Jayakarta. Presently, the date of the establishment, June 22, 1527 became Jakarta’s anniverssary. In 1619, the Dutch East India Company, popularly known as VOC (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) under Jan Pieter szoon Coen usurped Jayakarta and changed the name into Batavia, as a remainder of their founding fathers, the Batavir.Since then VOC built many buildings in this area until 1850. However, when VOC went bankrupt in 1799, this area was abandoned.

The next Governor General, Daendels, brought down some of these buildings and used the materials to build a new town called Nieuw Batavia a.k.a Weltevreden in the area known as Lapangan Banteng.Fortunately, there are many beautiful buildings still remained in Kota Tua Jakarta. Once abandoned, now the government started to revitalize this area. Some of the buildings are already renovated, they are returned to their prime condition. Six of them are functioned as museums, hence, the area is known as District Museum. The central area of the old town is Fatahillah plaza in front of Fatahillah Museum. Fatahillah plaza is surrounded by Puppet Museum, Fine Art and Ceramic Museum, Batavia Cafe, and Postal office.

HISTORY OF PEKALONGAN
Pekalongan City is a city located in the north of Java Island, close to Pemalang, Tegal and Semarang cities. Pekalongan City is in the Central Java province with its head office in Semarang.
The name Pekalongan comes from the name of Topo Ngalong, Joko Bau (Bau Rekso), son of Kyai Cempaluk, known as the hero of the Pekalongan region. Later he became a hero of the Mataram kingdom, said to have originated in Kesesi, Pekalongan Regency. One time, he was told by his uncle Ki Cempaluk to serve Sultan Agung, the king of Mataram. Joko Bau was assigned to bring Ratansari's daughter from Kalisalak Batang to the palace, but Jaka Bau felt in love with the princess.
As a punishment Jaka Bau was ordered to secure the coastal areas which were constantly attacked by Chinese pirates. He then meditated in the gambiran forest, after which Joko Bau changed his name to Bau Rekso and received an order from Sultan Agung to prepare troops and build a boat to form a fleet which then carried out attacks on companies in Batavia (1628 and 1629). After experiencing a failure Bau Rekso decided to return and go to ngalong (hanging like bats) in the gambiran forest. In the tap, none could disturb him including Raden Nganten Dewi Lanjar (Ratu Segoro Lor) and his stealth warriors. In the end, because of her extraordinary strength, Goddess Lanjar fell to her knees and finally Dewi Lanjar was edited by Joko Bau.
The only thing that could interfere with Joko Bau's topology was Tan Kwie Djan who got an assignment from Mataram, then Tan Kwie Djan and Joko Bau sowan went to Mataram to receive further assignments. From this origin Ngalong topo then emerged the name Pekalongan. The appearance of the name Pekalongan according to this version around the XVII century in the era of Sultan Agung and in the history of Bau Rekso was declared dead on September 21, 1628 in Batavia in the war against the VOC. The place where Joko Bau topped his place is believed to vary, among others in Kesesi, Wiradesa, Ulujami, Comal, Pekalongan Square and Slamaran.

Introduction Kutai kingdom is a Hindu kingdom in the archipelago that has the oldest historical evidence amongst every other kingdom that existed in Indonesia. Estimated in the 5th century (approximately 400 C.E), the existence of Kutai Kingdom was based on 7 yupa pillar shaped inscriptions found in Kaman estuary, Kutai Kertanegara Regency, East Kalimantan, Indonesia. The kingdom was located in Muara Kaman, East Kalimantan, specifically in the Mahakam river upstream. The 'Kutai' name was formed from place names found in inscriptions that indicates the existence of the kingdom. The Kutai name was given by the experts, since there are no inscriptions that precisely states the actual name of this kingdom. This is because of the very limited information that can be obtained due to the lack of historical sources and evidence. Today, the name is preserved in the three regiences in East Kalimantan: Kutai Kartanegara Regency, West Kutai Regency and the East Kutai Regency. The major river of this region was and until now is the Mahakam River.

Talitha Shafiqah Rahmadhanny
33/XC

Tabina ahnaf m/xc/32

Tamansari Ngayogyakarta) is a site of the former palace garden or palace of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat Palace, which can be compared to the Bogor Botanical Gardens as the gardens of the Bogor Palace. This garden was built during the time of Sultan Hamengku Buwono I (HB I) in 1758-1765 / 9. Initially, the park which got the title "The Fragrant Garden" has an area of more than 10 hectares with around 57 buildings in the form of buildings, bathing pools, suspension bridges, water canals, as well as artificial lakes and artificial islands and underwater passageways. The garden, which was used effectively between 1765-1812, initially stretched from the southwest of the Kedhaton complex to the southeast of the M Merchant complex. But at this time, the only remnants of Taman Sari that can be seen are in the southwest of the Kedhaton complex.

Taman Sari

That said, Taman Sari was built in the former palace of the old, Pesanggrahan Garjitawati, which was founded by Susuhunan Paku Buwono II as a place to rest horse carriage that will go to Imogiri. As the leader of the Taman Sari development project, Tumenggung Mangundipuro was appointed. All development costs will be borne by the Regent of Madiun, Tumenggung Prawirosentiko, along with all his people. Therefore the Madiun area is exempt from taxation. In the midst of the development the project leader was taken over by Prince Notokusumo, after Mangundipuro resigned. Although officially as a royal garden, some buildings indicate that Taman Sari functions as the last bastion if the palace is attacked by enemies. It is said that one of the architects of this royal garden was a Portuguese better known as Demang Tegis.

Taman Sari Complex can be divided into at least 4 parts. The first part is an artificial lake located to the west. The next part is the building located in the south of the artificial lake, including the Umbul Binangun Bath. The third part is Pasarean Ledok Sari and Garjitawati Pond which is located in the south of the second part. The last part is the eastern part of the first and second parts and extends eastward to the southeast of the Magang complex.

Sikidang crater is part of Dieng plateau and it belongs to Banjarnegara regency, Central Java. There are actually several active craters which can be dangerous as its poisonous gas in several occasions, but they are also beautiful and worthy to be visited.

I came with my friend, Bimo at around 6.30 am. It was still quiet. Only several persons were there and the souvenir place was still closed. But it was a good chance for us to visit. We didn’t have to be in crowd and enjoyed the crater as long as we wished. Though it was cloudy and little bit drizzled, I and Bimo went to the crater. He said that the soil was so fragile and the crater could move anywhere. Prone to landslide and like living sand… I could feel warmth between coldness.

It smelled much alike your fart (hahahaha). Even my friend said you can release your gas there and nobody will blame you on it. As it smell stronger even than your stinkiest stomach wind. Despite of its wonderful odor, it contains of sulfur for making your skin softer and eliminate your acne. But beware, do not ever try to wash your face there as it is so strong and 100 percent sulfur bonus losing your face too (hehehe).

Bamboo fences are built in order to prevent people get closer to the crater. It is dangerous if you come closer, and I just felt satisfied when I could come there for the first time. Usually when I visit Dieng Plateau, I will visit different places and always in the morning, from 5 am until 10 am. The crater is hot and besides main crater, there are still other smaller crater which can appear anytime.

What I could feel is thankful as I can still visit this beautiful crater. Strong odor had gone and just happiness come. As its name..Kidang/deer, it can move to find out new place. And later when I search on internet, there is a legend related to the origins of the crater. It is much alike other legends which related to curse of a prince to a princess who rejected his love proposal. Prior to the Cultuurstel project by the Dutch East Indies, where since 1830 the tea plant began to become one of the main commodities of plantation products in Indonesia. Even before the 17th century, when tea seeds from Japan were brought by Andreas Cleyer from Germany and then planted them as ornamental plants in Batavia or Jakarta now.
According to Pande Made Kutanegara, an anthropologist from UGM in Yogyakarta, long before the 17th century it was suspected that drinking tea had become a habit of the Tegal community. According to him, the culture of drinking tea is rooted in Chinese tradition. Before there were tea plants in Indonesia, tea consumed in Tegal was imported directly from China.
Apart from that, there are interesting side points to note from the habit of drinking tea in Tegal. Even though the area of tea plantations in Tegal is actually relatively small compared to other neighboring areas such as Pekalongan, Pemalang, or Batang, for example, it is precisely in Tegal that the legendary downstream industry has emerged.
Slawi tea, is the name of the iconic tea. The word Slawi refers to the name of an area. Slawi is a forerunner to the leading tea producer in Indonesia. In the Slawi region it has indeed grown and developed several large tea factories and became iconic for Tegal Regency. In general, these factory factories stood almost simultaneously in the range of 1930-1940.
To meet the demand for tea supply, some raw materials were imported from West Java, the largest tea production center in Indonesia. The supply of tea leaves from West Java is then processed by a factory in Tegal into jasmine tea, green tea and black tea.
Because of this tradition, then in the square in Tegal Regency, precisely is in front of the Slawi Great Mosque. Then there we will meet a monument in the form of a teapot that reads “Tea Pot”.

By the end of December, all major Republican held cities in Java and Sumatra were in Dutch hands.
The Republican President, Vice-President, and all but six Republic of Indonesia ministers were captured by Dutch troops and exiled on Bangka Island off the east coast of Sumatra.
In areas surrounding Yogyakarta and Surakarta, Republican forces refused to surrender and continued to wage a guerrilla war under the leadership of Republican military chief of staff General Sudirman who had escaped the Dutch offensives. An emergency Republican government, was established in West Sumatra.
On March 1, 1949 at 6 am, Republican forces launched March 1 General Offensive. The Offensive caught the Dutch by surprise. For his part, Hamengkubuwono IX allowed his palace to be used as a hide out for the troops. For 6 hours, the Indonesian troops had control of Yogyakarta before finally retreating.
The Offensive was a moral and diplomatic success, inspiring demoralised troops all around Indonesia, as well as proving to the United Nations that the Indonesian army still existed and were capable of fighting. On the other hand, the offensive had demoralized the Dutch forces, because they never thought that Indonesian forces could assault and control the city, even for a few hours.

Birds were said to be reluctant to fly near the region and villagers in the area tended to regard the forest around the lake as eerie and somewhat mysterious. A sulfur plant known as the Zwavel Ontgining Kawah Putih was first established near the lake during the period of Dutch rule in Java.
Battle of Surabaya

Laila Battle of Surabaya

The Battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militia against British and British Indian troops as a part of the Indonesian National Revolution.

The peak of the battle was in November 1945. The battle was the heaviest single battle of the revolution and became a national symbol of Indonesian resistance. Fighting broke out on 30 October after the British commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby was killed in a skirmish. Although the Colonial forces largely captured the city in three days, the poorly armed Republicans fought for three weeks, and thousands died as the population fled to the countryside.

The battle and defence mounted by the Indonesians galvanised the nation in support of independence and helped garner international attention. For the Dutch, it removed any doubt that the Republic was not simply a gang of collaborators without popular support. It also had the effect of convincing Britain that wisdom lay on the side of neutrality in the revolution; within a few years, in fact, Britain would support the Republican cause in the United Nations.

Considered a heroic effort by Indonesians, the battle helped galvanise Indonesian and international support for Indonesian independence. 10 November is celebrated annually as Heroes’ Day.
