Animal Cruelty and Fighting by Jillian

Animals are in pain every day. I’m not saying emotionally hurt, but I’m meaning animals who are beaten or even killed from their owners. Think about a dog being thrown around by their tails or even a cat that is in desperate need of food and water. There are many kinds of animals who are suffering in so much pain other than the usual house pets; dogs and cats. By: Jillian Oldroyd

Also known as animal abuse, is legally defined as any act of violence or neglect that inflicts suffering or death of an animal. Acts of cruelty are of two categories: active and passive. Active cruelty is an intentional act aimed at inflicting injury or death. Neglect-failing to act in ways that preserve the well-being of an animal is an example of passive cruelty.

Do you ever wonder on why people neglect animals? The answer is pretty simple. There are many reasons on why a person would neglect an animal. Usually owners who do active abuse may stem from personality disorders or criminal activity and passive owners could be depressed or not able to take care of themselves to care for their animals.

Animal fighting is both an active and passive neglect to animals. Animal fighting is a contest in which people urge two or more animals to fight for the purpose of human entertainment. Usually there are the three main animal fights: dog fighting, cock fighting, and hog-dog fighting. Dog fighting is when two dogs fight until one dog is badly injured or died from the injuries the other dog inflicted. Cock fighting is the same as dog fighting but they have a razor on their legs to make them feel pain and fight the other
rooster. Last of all hog-dog fighting is one or more dogs fighting a hog with its horns cut off until one of the dogs dies from a painful kick or slam or the
hog is knocked down and eaten by the dogs.

Canine victims usually suffer ongoing neglect and cruelty during the “training” process. Often they are forced to wear heavy chains and run on treadmills, left outside without shelter, fed steroids, stimulants, narcotics to increase muscle mass, aggression, and feel no pain in a fight, starved to become aggressive or “make weight” in a contract fight, and subjected to cruel amateur ear cropping and treatment for fighting injuries. What happens to the female dogs in dog fighting? Females are confined in “rape boxes” for breeding other dogs for money and betting.

It's Legal In Some States

Have you ever thought why not just the investigators or the police just stop this abuse? Well it’s not that simple. Investigators do try to stop the abuse, but stopping a fight doesn’t stop the whole organization. It’s rare for even a fight to be stopped. Animal fighting though is legal in some states and animals are getting hurt and horribly neglected every day from this cause.

In 2003, dog fighting convictions increased 400% in Indianapolis/Marion County alone. Dog fighting is a felony act and it has been linked to many other illegal and criminal activities.

The Solution

The solution to animal fighting requires a community commitment. Vital information to an animal fight helps your neighborhood become a safer place for living, work, and family. Some signs to be watchful for a safer community and animals treated fairly is: short ear crops, wounds, lacerations, thick chains with or without weights on the animal's collars, a cat mill, a treadmill, people of all ages coming and going in groups from a residence or other site, some with dogs. Virtually an area within a community can hold an animal fight whether it is an abandoned house, vacant garage, isolated warehouse, basements, secluded park, farmhouses, and other areas.

Remember it's up to the community to spread the word that animal fighting is not acceptable in your neighborhood for the animals and for a safer area from criminal acts who cause this animal fighting.
