Jeannette explains that birthdays in the Walls home is not that big of a deal, but when Jeannette turns 10, her father asks her what she wants most. With a little bit of shame and hope, Jeannette asks her father to stop drinking. After a few days, Rex Walls has conquered through withdraw and was completely sober, but this state of character is short lived. Rex soon turns to alcohol after a small hardship despite his promise or gift to Jeannette. Jeannette's reaction is "After all he'd put himself through, I couldn't believe Dad had gone back to the booze"(pg.123) Rex's broken promise made Jeannette lose loyalty and trust in her father. This can fall under the theme of loyalty.
