In this section, Zakaria touches on why nationalism is as predominant as it is today, and the factors at play leading to its growth. Some of these being a world dominated by US culture and thought, as well as the increasing economic independence of other countries. It speaks on how many countries are breaking away from the US focused narrative, and have leaned towards a more inward look in their own history and ideals.

Q: With this increase of nationality in many countries, is there a visible decrease in individualism?

Why does the US try to maintain its international 'policing' when it would be more efficient to develop alongside these countries and form compromises?

While it may be more efficient and cooperative to work with and alongside nations, the United States has been incredibly obstinate to do so. As Zakaria reiterates when he discusses the Post-American world, globally the United States has been at the “top” for a long time and is eager to stay there. As Zakaria describes it, the United States is most challenged by the Rise of the Rest thus its power is challenged. International policing is a means to exercise the power that the United States has in the global hierarchy.
