It is important to keep the student involved during a parent teacher conference. To prepare the parents or caregivers and the students for what will be talked about during the conference it is a great idea to have the students do a self evaluation of there work and behavior of the period. This method lowers student anxiety about what will be talked about during the conference. A method with the parents and caregiver involves having positive interactions with them prior to the conference, phone calls, emails, or notes home to communicate that a conference is coming up.

All conferences should start with making sure the parents/caregiver and student is comfortable and relaxed. Prior to the conference organize all information you will present to the parent in a neat simple fashion. After having the parents sit down it is good to ask how their day was? or other questions not directly related to the conference but can incite a positive interaction. After getting familiar with one another begin with any questions they have and if they seen the student self evaluation. From their the conference should smoothly continue.
