Increasing a student's sense of belonging would have have a positive impact on achievement. A student's comfort level, with peers, the teacher, and the curriculum play a role in their success. We also need to explore what success means for that student. What support systems/structures can be created in the classroom to address metacognitive skills without sacrificing rigor and course specific content and skills.

If we choose to focus on identifying and learning more about barriers, we could grow our knowledge and then lessen the negative impact of barriers on student learning. It will help give us a better understanding of the impact of the problem. What do people perceive to be the problem? Given this, how would it be best to work to remove them? What actionable steps would be best to take? It could also increase communication between teachers, students, parents, admin. It might also help us to get a better understanding of what student success looks like: is it GPA? is it consistent attendance? And what about student voice about what they feel "success" looks like? Learning about barriers should be an early step in our group's process -- we cannot move forward until we overcome these barriers. Do our systems and structures allow us enough flexibility to support multiple versions of student success?

We need increased communication, but it needs a clear focus or vision for what we are doing as a school. Perhaps we could move toward individualized plans for each student. Perhaps rethinking the scheduling/course selection process to make it more individualized, more personal. more reflective of what's actually happening to each particular student.
