She is afraid but still courageous enough to make contact with Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. She seems to be a compliant and subjugated step daughter, having taken some abuse from Dr. Roylott. Also she could be viewed as a sensitive person, because she misses her twin sister a great deal. 

She is afraid of losing social standing, which is seen when she takes steps to avoid public knowledge of Dr. Roylott pushing the local blacksmith into a stream.
