I don't feel like we should have been given both RTI and ESL as they are both full time jobs. We weren't even properly prepared for what we were walking into this year. If the district knew that this was going to happen, we should have been better trained on it over the summer. Not throughout a school year while we are still trying to do our initial jobs (many of us first year RTI interventionists, which is hard enough). Now we are just doing both jobs poorly while expected to bang out great results. Our district is constantly preaching to take care of our emotional/mental health, and yet they continue to give us multiple hats to wear. It is demoralizing. We continuously have to cancel groups with kids because ESL work/trainings get in the way. So now we are hurting kids. This has also taken any possible planning time we have away and brought on a tremendous amount of work and stress. Any planning time I might get is after school and on weekends, which is the time I should be spending with my own family. My kids don't deserve to have me absent because I am not given the time needed at work to plan and prepare for my students. Add on those of us trying to do Reading Academy as well this year and it is not okay. I am hoping that our district takes a good look at the number of ESL students we have in our district and realize that this is a full time position for many campuses. Especially campuses with dual language programs. At secondary we no longer have a dedicated ESL planning period. My personality and professionalism dictate that I put student need first. Between PLC, planning for ESOL, on-level English, ELDA, and MTA we are maxed out. Inevitably the work gets done outside of school hours.
