  • What do you already know about the cultures of the community?  What insiders do you know?
    • The community that I teach in is in an urban area where many of the families are Latino. Many of my families first language is Spanish. I have students that are first generation Americans. This community takes pride in it’s diverse population. There are streets named after famous Latino and African role models. There is a rich variety of restaurants offering different styles of cuisine. Many of the staff members are actually from the same county that the school is located in.

    • I too come from a Hispanic immigrant family household. My parents came to this country when they were young adults. So like many of my students, I had that pressure of being a first generation student. When I tell my students how I was the first person in my family to go to college, many of them get excited and find it very relatable.

    • I am Latina so although I am not from the area, I feel like I was quickly able to connect with the members of this community. I feel like this fact makes me an insider. The members of this community feels comfortable talking to me about personal matters. The supervisors at my school constantly point out that I have wonderful communication with my students’ families. I am one of the only teachers that fluently speaks Spanish, so I think that parents just really appreciate  being able to easily communicate with their child’s teacher. However, I do feel like an outside when the students talk about places around the town. I am not really familiar with the community, so many times I don’t know the places that my students talk about.

    • I want to find out what special celebrations that community enjoys. I also want to know what the community wants to improve on and what they are proud in. I also think it is important to find out if any changes are being planned in the community (eg. new restaurant, updating a park,etc.)
